Wade`s status still in question
Associated Press
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Dwyane Wade`s rib muscle injury was feeling better Saturday, but his status for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Detroit Pistons won`t be known until shortly before tipoff.
Miami leads the best-of-seven series 3-2 and has a chance to advance to the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs.
Wade, who strained a right ribcage muscle in the third quarter of Game 5, didn`t participate in the team`s morning shootaround but watched film with his teammates.
``He`s a little bit better, but we`ll find out tonight,`` Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said, adding that he hadn`t yet decided who would start in Wade`s place if the second-year guard was unable to play. ``I won`t make the determination. He will, based on the pain, and our medical staff will in terms of the way he`s able to move.``
Wade missed five regular-season games due to injuries, and Miami went 3-2. Rasual Butler replaced Wade in the starting lineup in two of those games, and Shandon Anderson, who hasn`t played in this series, started the other two.
Wade has been Miami`s leading scorer in the postseason, averaging 28.0 points, 6.8 assists and 6.1 rebounds. Butler had a strong Game 5 with 12 points in 23 minutes.
``I think our players have confidence in the fact that they can play effectively with (Shaquille O`Neal) out or with Dwyane out,`` Van Gundy said, ``but it`s not from what we did in the year against different teams. This is a whole different animal here, playing the defending champions on their home floor. It`s a lot different situation that any we`ve been in without those guys.``
Wade, who didn`t speak with reporters Saturday, has said the injury limits his ability to turn his body and his side-to-side movement.
Van Gundy wasn`t fully buying the argument that Wade at half-speed was better than no Wade at all.
``It would depend on how limited he is. You just don`t know till you see,`` Van Gundy said. ``If what you`re talking about is a guy who can play effectively - maybe not be quite as explosive, but still be better than what we would have without him - obviously. But if he`s a guy who`s really hampered and can`t get up and down the floor, he`s just out there, then no, it`s not better.``
Miami has a chance to reach the championship round for the first time in franchise history, while the defending champion Pistons were trying to keep the series alive and force a Game 7 in Miami on Monday night.
