We’ve seen where hockey is growing in the United States — in the Sun Belt states that have N.H.L. teams, and not in most of the game’s traditional northern strongholds — but that tells only half the story of hockey in America on this Hockey Day in America.

For all its growth in the Southeast and Southwest over the last decade or two, hockey is still very much a winter game that thrives where there is a culture of winter. According to USA Hockey’s state-by-state player registration figures, which you’ll find in the chart below the jump, the country’s northernmost states are still the places where hockey is king.
