Oilers' project in dis-Souray
By Stephen Knight
National Hockey League general managers don't seem to mind having their best players concussed out of the game or blowing the budget on long-term deals for underachieving free agents in the summer, but what they clearly don't like is when the employees start to get lippy.
Witness the sound of nothing but crickets when 10-year defenseman and power- play quarterback Sheldon Souray cleared re-entry waivers at half price on Monday with no takers.
None.
Apparently not one of the 29 other non-Edmonton teams in the league could use a guy with a booming slap shot and a veteran presence. Well, maybe they could, but general managers, who don't agree on much, agree on one thing: the hired help should shut up and do their jobs.

From what I hear, word is Souray can't skate at all anymore.

He just hasn't been playing good in Hersey is what I have heard. For instance, I heard he wasn't even on the top PP unit.

Fixed.
He's always been a pilon, but at least before he could shoot the puck and fight. With that wrist of his now, forget about it.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Souray has done this to himself.
If he wanted out of Edmonton, he should have gone to Managment (or had his agent do it) and asked to be traded. Instead he went to the media, called out the coach, manager, team, etc. He went scorched earth style on purpose..... knowing there'd be no way back.
What he didn't count on, is that nobody in their right mind would touch his contract. 5.5 million for a guy who's injury prone, and not very good (outside of that hard slap shot) is a waste. He caught the Oilers desperate enough to find someone to take their money. Nobody was going to trade anything for him, he's simply not worth the cap hit.
I'm sure how bad he's been (apparently) in Hershey this year has a lot to do with motivation. It's probably hard to get up for games in a league where you think you don't deserve to be there.
What's commical is that the re-entry waivers meant that any team could have had him for the remainder of the season..... roughly 1.4 million left on this year's deal.... the team picking him up would be on the hook for half of that (both in $$$ and against the cap). They also would have been stuck with him next year - paying 2.75 million (both $$ and cap hit, with the Oilers also picking up the equivalent).
NOBODY would take him at that amount.
I'm sure the Oilers will buy him out in the summer, and he will find someone to play for.... making a million (or so) bucks.... but just wow.

I have to agree, the worst thing that a player can do is talk very openly about any issues they have with management and the team in general.
This makes it hard for the GM to shop the player around since it shows that the player is potentially cancerous in the dressing room.
If Souray is not that well in Hershey coupled with the fallout he had publicly with management has possibly killed his career in the NHL...
And then the mess Heatley made from get publicly saying he wanted to be traded out of Ottawa last year...
Since there was no interest in Souray during re-entry waivers, there is little chance anyone is interested in him, especially with the cap restrictions. Only remote chances start on July 1 if there is any at all...
