Can't really add anything to this, other than confirming what everyone else said - yes!

When they came out, some people thought they hit gold with a Stanley Cup GU swatch. I'd see them pop up on ebay for $600

thanks alot for your immediate replies & anecdotic details :) this type of patches is really kind of questionable to me (it has a by-taste of "trying to fool the collectors" to me, right?), though some look quite nice

I don't think they intended to fool anyone.
All the marketing materials for the set made it really obvious. They used manufactured patches, to make the base cards look nice.

They were simply sprucing up the base cards, and from a value standpoint, made busting that product that much better.

ok to say its fooling maybe contains a bit of a "legal accuse" which is not really intended.
UD and Panini do the same thing with manufactured patches in several products, and yeah, these cards often look fine, but in my view these manufuctured patches undermine a bit their efforts to stress that their products are "authentic" memorabilia products

The thing about ITG is that in that set, they used manufactured patches, and were OBVIOUS about it. Upper Deck does the same thing with Letter/NUmber marks, Black Rookie cards, Marks of a Nation, etc....
At least you will never get a card with a "photo shoot" or "event used" piece of memorabilia from ITG (which upper deck does ALL THE TIME). They guarantee that every piece of memo is GAME USED. I even read an article about how they found out that a Hextall jersey which was certified as game used was actually only event worn, and they took back all of the cards and Re-Issued them with new memorabilia which had been authenticated as game used.
ITG is the LAST company that would try to fool people with fake memorabilia.
These manufactured patch cards were an awesome way of making their base look great.
