While I find the shootout exciting to watch, I hate the concept of the shootout and have ever since it began regardless if my favourite team benefits or not. Hockey is a team sport which involves everyone’s participation, yet only 3 players (on average) and a goalie are involved in the deciding factor of a shootout and ultimately the game. As somawilt said, "It's like ending a baseball game with a homerun derby, a basketball game with a free throw competition or a football game with a field goal challenge”. It doesn't make sense to have a team game be decided on the work of just a few players.
In addition, I think the OT 4-4 is almost just as bad. The whole game is played 5-5, but just to increase the chances of the game ending faster, the NHL removed a player from each team in overtime. While I understand the NHL wants to create excitement and draw more fans to the game with the 4-4 OT and shootout, I prefer back when overtime was 20 minutes of 5-5 hockey and using the win/loss/tie method. It's even more contradictory that the NHL uses one format throughout the whole season but then use the "classic rules" during the playoffs.

Have you ever, ever, EVER heard of a playoff game going to a shoot-out? No you haven't and no you never will. The shoot-out is designed for REGULAR SEASON ONLY! Playoff games will always be out and outright 5-on-5 sudden death It doesn't matter how long it takes.

I have stopped watching overtime since the tie was removed. I dont see anything wrong with 2 teams having a equally skilled night. The shootout is a farce, Ending a team game with individual skills

I agree with game8 the shootout is a farce. as much as i hated watching a game end in a tie i hate the shootout and three point system even more. If your going to have a shootout or overtime of any kind losers should get nothing.
loser =
a person or team who has failed at a particular activity
Why reward that with anything.
