CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Bobcats shut down operations Tuesday to launch a major community effort. Players, cheerleaders, staff and owner Michael Jordan were all involved in community-related efforts.

As part of the Cats Care program, the team headed out to different parts of the city Tuesday to help the community. The program kicked off at 6 a.m. at the CMS Orr Road Bus Depot, where staff members served breakfast to 150 school bus drivers.

Second Harvest Food Bank, Boys and Girls Club and the Men's Shelter of Charlotte were also among the stops.

On Tuesday afternoon, Bobcats owner Michael Jordan surprised students at Northridge Middle School.

“Look around and look at your teachers. They are the most important people in this room,” Jordan told students. “They help you improve each and every day.”

Students got the opportunity to ask Jordan and Bobcats players questions.

CMS Superintendent Peter Gorman said the school was chosen for the event because it sits in a community struggling with economic challenges. In spite of that, the student body is showing high academic improvement.

“This is a school that's really working hard in a focused direction and we wanted to reward those students and show them their increased student achievement is paying off, and we appreciate it and we're going to bring some folks to tell them, ‘Good job!’” Gorman said.

Jordan said team members were glad to have the chance to show students they care.

“We play a game (and) we are in entertainment field, but we care about our community,” he said. “We care about our kids (and) want them to learn and understand the values of life, not just sports.”
