perhaps the piece would look nicer if it was made like the following (i just did a quick photoshop)... the only problem with this is it would be more expensive than the piece you already have as itd be more complex cut work

I used photo corners to hold them in place. It doesnt hold as well as tape but it also wont damage like the tape.

I like that but I want to keep them looking as close to the same as possible.
