Top 100 Sets Outline -- PLEASE READ!!!
First off, let me thank you for checking out what could be the longest opening post of any thread in the history of hockey card collecting. Curiosity has brought you here, and I hope interest in the project will keep you here ... at least, long enough to check out the specifics of this exciting project.
As many of you know, this is the 100-year anniversary of the release of the historic C56 set, widely considered the first "true" set in the hobby. To commemorate this event, I'm going to rank the top 100 sets in the history of the hockey card industry, and provide write-ups for each. But I won't be compiling the entire list myself; this is where you come in.
Listed below is every major set found in Beckett's magazine-style price guide. There are around 550, give or take a few. I do NOT need you to go through each and every set. I will be, but that's because I'm the one writing this thing. Your level of involvement is completely and entirely up to you. If you want to rate one set, that's fine. If you feel industrious enough to tackle 10, or 20, or 50, or 300, then I'll happily accept the help. If you want to do five today, five tomorrow and 20 in a week from now, that's great, too. The more help I get, the more accurate and fair the list will be and the easier it will be to compile a list that truly represents the opinions of you, the collectors.
You'll be rating each set on three factors, with each factor given a rating out of 10. I encourage you to PLEASE be as specific as you can with these ratings. If you "sort of" liked something, don't give it a 10. Give it an 8, or an 8.5, or even an 8.3. I would like to see you break up ratings into tenths of a decimal because the more specific you can be, the greater accuracy the list will have. Your rating could literally make the difference between a set being 10th, 15th or 20th. And note, as well, that you are rating the set as well as each of its accompanying subsets. Please factor that in when you make your decisions. Liked 2007/08 Upper Deck but hated the subsets? Make sure you reflect that in your final vote. Hated 2006/07 SPx but LOVED the subsets? That should be included, as well.
The ratings categories are:
DESIGN: How do the cards look? Do you like the overall design? Are they visually appealing? This section is fairly straightforward. If you're not sure about a particular set, look for it online. You'll find examples from every hockey set ever produced on eBay, and 99% of them will have pictures.
PLAYER SELECTION/RCs: Who's in the set? And just as importantly, who isn't? Sets with strong rookie crops will likely earn higher marks than sets where you have just a handful of rookies. This is important, especially with more modern sets, because rookies drive the product. Be equally critical of each of the subsets of a particular product. Say to yourself, "did (insert card company) do the best job it could selecting players for this subset?" These are the kinds of things I'm looking for. This is where a Beckett will come in handy, for those of you looking to help out with older sets.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (ONLY FOR PRE-1990 SETS): How does this set stand out in the collecting world? These factors are usually decided by how much trading volume the sets produce, groundbreaking rookie inclusions, scarcity and so on. For example, you might decide that the 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee set has only a handful of "key" rookies, resulting in a slightly lower player selection rating. Yet, with the inclusion of Gretzky, the 1979-80 set is clearly one of the most notable products ever produced, which would result in a higher historical significance rating. Try to consider all of these factors when doing the final tally.
"GOODIES" (ONLY FOR 1990-91 AND NEWER): Inserts. Autos. Patches. Bieber. Whatever a set provides beyond plain old base cards, this is where you reward it. Obviously a set with 20 different "blah" subsets isn't going to score as high as one with three or four "WOW" subsets, but how you break these down is entirely up to you. Use whichever parameters you like. Perhaps you're big on autos. Perhaps you like subsets with disgusting multi-break patches over the simple one-color swatch. You're the boss.
You'll end up with a score out of 30, but don't worry about tabulating that. I just need the scores for each category, which I'll enter into a spreadsheet and let it do the adding for me. Once voting is closed, I'll go through the votes, tally everything up and come up with the final list from there.
I'd ask that you PLEASE send me a PM with your rankings, or send them to [email protected] (which I'll be checking every day.) Do NOT post your votes in this thread ... these are meant to be between myself and the voter, and I won't use any votes posted in here. When you send your votes in, just list the set and the three numbers in order (design, player selection, history/goodies). For example, "1973-74 Topps (9.5, 6.8, 6.5). It's as easy as that.
I'm leaving all of you a LOT of time for this, because there are still sets to come out this year (which I'll add to this list as they're released) and because I know a lot of people dial it down a bit in the summer. The deadline for votes is AUGUST 31, 2011. And as I mentioned earlier, you can send them along in bits and pieces over the course of the spring and summer, or in one giant e-mail or PM anytime during that same time frame. I would like to start writing this thing on Sept. 1, and finish it up by the end of the month.
Thanks in advance for your help, and I look forward to reading your thoughts!

I'm sure that all you're asking people to do is submit a number (i.e. 8.5, 10, 2, whatever....) but do you have any use for an explaination?
Where I think I've got a valid opinion / point to make - I don't mind spending the time writing a few sentances about a set..... but I'll only do it if you're interested :)

Always. The more information, the better. The reason I mentioned submitting numbers and little else is because I don't want anyone to think they HAVE to add explanations or details ... but if you want to say WHY you felt a certain way, that's certainly something I would gladly apply to the final product.
Hope that answers your question!

Yup!
Obviously I'm not going to try and write a book for you.... but where I feel I've got some info / opinions worth adding, I probably will - just wanted to make sure you can use it.
(Of course this means I won't have it finished in 1 night
)

I'd argue that the 90-91 Upper Deck had historical significance and should be judged on that rather than goodies. The 90-91 OPC Premier was a landmark set as well in terms of its impact on the hobby. It helped to reverse the mass-production tide epitomized by Pro Set that year.
Or maybe I still like to think of 90-91 as the golden year of hockey trading cards. I even treasure that year's Pro Set, both series.
Otherwise I have very little knowledge of about 90% of the sets listed.

you are missing a few from 03-04. I didnt check other years:
03-04 Pacific Exhibit
03-04 Topps Traded
03-04 eTopps (arguable)
03-04 Pacific Quest for the Cup

Great points. I'll shift the dates to make sure 1990-91 sets are judged on historical significance rather than goodies. Thanks!
