yes I feel as if people look for that high end, shield, or crest patch etc...
I collect Pat LaFontaine, and he has little autos, and little jersey cards.
I treasure my 80s base cards. SOmetimes it's not about a rookie, #, auto patch
it's getting kinda stupid
and every low balls everyone
I try not too, but I just can't afford cards all the time...
base cards are enjoyable... i love them

I have to question anyone who would complain so vociferously about the way others choose to view and enjoy the hobby. Whose business is it if Collector A opts for the vintage route while Collector B decides that it's high end or bust? The great thing about where the hobby is right now is the fact that there are plenty of available options for both sides. Between eBay, message boards, card shows and other assorted goodies, there is no reason why vintage or flavor-of-the-week collectors can't scratch their respective itches when it comes to buying, selling or trading.
As for the ones doing the complaining, with shouts of "noob" and the like ... frankly, I feel sorry for them. Being negative, bitter and/or condescending is a choice. You can always "choose" to not be any of those things. If you decide instead that being crusty is the way to go ... well then clearly, the "noobs" aren't the problem.

It's a good topic actually.
When I was a kid all there was to collect were "base" cards and "rookie base" cards, there were few other choices. Like anything else in the world collecting has evolved and become a multi billion dollar industry.
Back in the day you had topps and OPC (for the most part). There was a sense of accomplishment when you finished a set and you never really collected one person as there were so few of any one person. Now the choices are so overwhelming. Do you collect player, set, brand, game used, auto, rookie...its never ending?
Considering no two people are identical with their wants and needs we need to embrace the difference each person brings. Young, old, male and female, they will all come in and find their own place and ultimately find sombody who is similar.
That is the great thing about this site, there are thousands of posts with a variety of needs, wants and haves. I get extremely confused with anybody who bashes another collector. I admire those who know what they want and go and and try to get it.
I have jumped back into the hobby after 15 years away from it and OMG is it different! I am still finding my niche but I can't help but wanting to collect the higher end stuff. That doesn't make me a bad guy or a good guy. I am doing this because I have a bit of extra money now-a-days, I love the challenge of getting cards I want and most importanty, its fun!
Walter, you have my permission to go and get whatever cards you want...lol!
My 2 cents.
Happy trading boys and girls!

It's too bad that this stuff happens..... I mean, this is a hobby - nobody should be telling anybody what the right or wrong way to enjoy their hobby is.
I'm guessing though, sometimes a situation like this comes up:
Trader 'A' posts a box break / sale thread / trade thread (whatever) and lists lots of different cards.
Trader 'B' is interested in some of the lower end inserts, maybe even a few base cards.
While trader 'A' is more than happy to get rid of the inserts and base that he doesn't want, he's not willing to to make a deal for similar cards - because the cost (both time & shipping expense) involved don't seem worth it to him, to acquire a few cards that he's got no interest in.
Trader 'B' is now stuck with the fact that not many people want to deal in lower end stuff - unless they're willing to take multiples and trade higher end stuff back.
Pretty easy for both parties to get frustrated when something like this happens. Trader 'A' is only interested in getting back cards he actually wants (who could blame him?) and won't do a deal otherwise. Trader 'B' can make a reasonable offer - but 'A' is only interested GU / Autos (that 'B' doesn't have) or money (that 'B' doesn't want to spend).
I think 'greedy' and 'noobs' are both unfair comments. It's really just another example of the modern version of the hobby brushing up against a more traditional version of it.
How does someone who has little interest in base cards make a deal with someone who is only interested in base cards? It's hard.... and I would imagine that it'll frustrate the heck out of people on both sides of the equation.

You are taking things out of context and way too personal. Obviously if you been in the hobby prior to 2005, you aren't new, so you have absolutely no need to be upset.
#2. Just look at the UD inserts, recycled cardboard from 91-92. We've seen the Hockey Heroes in 91-92 and weren't impressed then, why should a person jump up and down again. The Header Cards? Ooh what design.....
#3. You want to collect Game-Used and Autos specifically, no problem.. Just don't come on here with a Bucket full of UD inserts claiming that you collect only HOF patches and Autos.
That type of behaviour is a daily occurrence on here. I have new collectors wondering why I won't trade my HOF Autos for their UD Victory Game Breakers inserts.
Understand?

If the hobby has a problem, to me, its the open-mindedness of its members. I am game to tolerate the quirks of collector pedants who get snitty when things are not just so, but out and out venom against anyone who collects cards a certain way is flat out retarded.
When I started collecting again, I didn't do it because I wanted to collect pictures. I loved the idea of mem and autos, because it brought me closer to the game. It's something real, that has touched the NHL and then found its way to me.
Some of this poison has to be the result of internet anonymity too, I'd think.

Collecting is personal, we all have our own preferences and means to obtain what we want/need. I happen to be a wrapper and type set collector. I'll buy a pack or 2 just for the wrapper (sometimes more to save an unopened pack). If I'm lucky, I get a decent insert/parallel; g/u or auto if I'm really lucky! Then try to fill in the rest via trades. Most of the time, it has to be purchases either at my lame local card show but mostly through Ebay. As it is, I don't have much in the way of gu or autos, and what I do have, no one really wants. I prefer to trade like for like but am always somewhat flexible (that's where the personal comes in).
I see all the time someone asking for flavor of the month rookie cards with not a lick of anything valuable to offer in return. My response? Move on and see if there's another trader to work with. No need for name calling or trading just to trade; it is YOUR hobby and nobody has the right to tell you how to collect or call you names for the things you do collect.
