Frustrating ebay buyer
Need objective opinions on this...
8th march I sold a Crosby spx auto /10 for $260. The guy paid straight away and was really impatient to have it shipped immediately, I told him I'm disabled and get help with the post, sometimes I do it myself but sometimes I get help from an assistant. So he would have to wait for a week. Unfortunately it didn't get posted when it should, due to a hospitalvisit and the assistant not doing her job. So last thursday I posted it myself. Yesterday he gets it, all in all exactly 3 weeks after he bought, which is a completely ok shippingtime from Sweden to Canada, god knows it more then often takes a month to get to me, and I have American friends who has to wait 2-3 weeks for post from Canada. So across the atlantic to Canada - 3 weeks- imo very ok. But in the meantime this guy has sent me tons of emails, asking and asking, is it shipped, is it in transit, why has it entered Montreal and not Toronto (like I would know). Just hassling a lot.
Finally he gets it. He says a corner is dinged. Note: he recieved up close photos on email before buying, the card was MINT. I always choose to believe buyer though. I ask for photo or scan, he can't take it. I choose to believe him anyway just in case I've fumbled when I packed it and caused that ding, ask him to judge it by grade, he says an 8 (Nmmt). Not too bad in other words. I offer $30 partial refund, OR, a total refund if he returns the card. Imo he got the card cheap and I don't mind if he returns it to me, I'm not willing to give him back more than $30 when he can't even give me proof. I think I'm very reasonable gibing him the second option of complete return & refund. His respone is "he's had enough of the circus", and "he's had so much hassle" and "I'm done with this" -whatever he means with that.
I can only assume he don't want to return it and is not happy with the partial refund offer. As a seller I can't do much more then offer full refund can I? And as for the hassle, as I said, 3 weeks time is afterall very normal and all the hassle is caused by himself really drowning me in more then a dozen emails where he has just worked up himself. The damage - well so far I haven't even seen it but still offer refund.
Now I'm feeling very uncomfortable with all this. What would you do?

First off if you do get the card i will be interested in buying it for $260 (its a great deal)
Even if the condition is 8 its still a great deal
And i think you are a very fair person, for offering him a refund or even a free $30.
I would of just said "it was in great deal and must of got dinged in the mail and i cant do anything about that sorry" esbesially if he has been hassling you.
I have never been in your position because i just started collecting, but i would ask him what do you want from me so you dont give me a negative rating, and see what he says.
Thats what i would do, but what do i know im just starting hockey card collecting.
So if you do get the card back im interested

I would do exactly what you did ... unfortunately, you can't please everyone - some people are just never happy. For ~500 ebay transactions I've probably had a dozen where I was left scratching my head.
A full refund is 100% satisfactory in my opinion.

I'd want any sort of proof before offering a refund. To me, it seems hes wants his $260 back, and keep the card.

ya i agree i will respect anyone that will give me a full refund. And i went through your photo bucket and you have some nice cards.
I have $175 to spend i was thinking of getting 100 packs of UD ice 09-10, but i might be willing to change my mind if you give me a deal

A deal on what? lol. I'm listening.
Yeah what I do understand is his frustration with the shipping, it did get sent a lot later then planned, but on the other hand once it was off it got to him in 5-6 days, so like I said, total time 3 weeks is ok. Now I don't get him at all, In suspect he wants a big partial refund and keep the card, without giving proof.

I was more or less getting at the guy trying to scam him for the $260. Saying they can't offer any proof is a huge red flag. I'd tell the buyer, if he wants any sort of refund, he needs to provide proof.

+1. It seems strange that the buyer won't send you proof of the damage. I would not provide a full refund without proof.
