TTM Prep

Hi All,

I am pretty new here and would like to get started with TTM (hockey related). Most of the cards I have that I would like to start sending out to hopefully get signed are pretty waxy/glossy. When sending out cards is there any prep you do to the card to help prevent sharpie/pen from running or bubbling? If so do you have any tips/suggestions? Also, I would like to hear any other advice you have to offer.

I don't do cards, but I know there are lots of threads here on preps. Sounds like a white eraser rubbed lightly on the card surface will do the trick.

best way is to move baby powder around on it with your finger, then wiping it off with a towel/rag. works perfect every time with any card!

I just got a card back and it didn't stick well using that method.

I've used both methods, the baby powder can turn into a big mess.
Becareful with the eraser. You can completly ruin the card if you rub to hard, Lol.

I've also used both methods.

I prefer when I'm at home to use baby powder for ttms - it can be a bit messy. I use the travel size powder bottles, unscented, only open it partway and it limits the amount that comes out. Just sprinkle some on and rub it around with your fingers. Turn the card on its side to knock off any extra powder. I have found that the lint free cloths for electronics work best for removing the excess powder, or just a good rub on a pair of flannel pj pants. I have had very good results with using the powder method.

As far as the eraser method goes - I have tried this out several times - I find it kinda hit and miss. You can rub the cards but if you don't take the time to take off the shavings left behind, you can end up with ridges thats cause the sharpie not to work as well. Trust me the last thing you want when getting players in-person is for your sharpie to get "clogged" up. The eraser method works well if you are in a rush, and if you have a hard surface to erase on - but just make sure to wipe it down really well!

There are some cards that have a really glossy finish to them - in that case I will use both methods, just to be sure.

If you are just starting out, I would strongly recommend using some of the lower end products for ttms - opc, and score are 2 of my favs to send out (no prep work needed).

i use a white eraser...just lightly go over the card and you'll be ok

I prep only using baby powder and then just wipe it off on a pair of jeans, I actually took an old pair and cut a swath to use for wiping off baby powder from glossy cards. I've sent approximately 100+ this way and have only had one come back smeared.

The other advice I would give you is to use kjsx2's suggestion of using low or no gloss cards. This is your best bet.

I use a withe eraser, I just carefully rub the card and the autograph will stick well.

Thank you all for your help, I will try both methods on cheap cards and see which I like best. If anyone else has any suggestions for a first timer on sending out cards or 8x10 photo via ttm, please let me know
