For many years, I have respectfully disagreed with the standards usually used to select the winner of the Professional Hockey Writers Association's Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

The trophy, named for the former University of Denver player who suffered fatal head injuries in a fall to the ice in an NHL game, is supposed to go to a player who exemplifies "perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey."

To me, that means we should be looking for a consummate professional.
