Hello from St.Louis.
Well I havent bought a pack of football cards since about 1983 or 1984.
I'm thinking about getting back into the hobby but with so many companies and sets of cards being made nowadays I'm really confused.
Please allow me to ask some questions.
1 Is Topps still the main card company to collect?
2 It looks to me like the better cards come in the hobby boxes and not the ones found at wal-mart and such.
3 Do the regular rookie cards have any value or just the signed or other special ones?
I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go but these should help get me going.
My main collecting interest will be in getting the whole set.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me and it's great to be here.

Hey buddy, welcome back to the hobby, this site is amazing ! i will try to help as much as i can, but i only been around for a few months :)
1.) I cant help here, i collect basketball and i know that Panini have the license for the NBA, i dont know whos got license for NFL sorry !
2.) The game used/auto cards are more likely to be found in the hobby boxs, you will have more hits in a hobby box compared to a retail box ... although saying that there is still a chance you will get autos/gu in single packs from walmart/target
3.) In basketball regular RCs still have value even if there not auto/patched ! people like Griffin/Rose rookie cards are still quite valued in bball, i cant speak for NFL, but obviously lesser known rookies, or rookies that arnt very good arent worth that much !
hope that helped you mate :) good luck with collecting

Welcome to SCF Dale.
First off, I love your username. I always loved the Hoth battle from ESB.
Anyway, I can't answer your first question because I only collect baseball. Second, I tend to think of the boxes you get at Wal-Mart like $20 sample packs. You probably aren't going to pull the good stuff unless you buy hobby boxes, but they will give you a good look at a set and it's inserts if you want to see what something looks like. Third, if a player is high profile enough regular rookie cards are going to have some value. In the case of baseball, Stephen Strasburg's rookie cards were huge until he got hurt.
I hope that helps, and if you have any questions about the site drop me a PM and I'll help if I can.

Welcome to SCF, Dale! I will try and help answer your questions.
1. The main company to collect is a matter of opinion, Topps and Pannini put out a wide variety of different sets. Both companies put out some great product!
2. Usually the autos and gu come from Hobby packs, but sometimes you can hit something from the retail packs. Although the odds are greater in the retail stuff.
3. Regular RC'S still usually hold pretty good value, the premium brands will carry a higher bookvalue.
Feel free to contact me if i can help in any other way.

Welcome to scf!
1) As of now, yes Topps is the main company producing baseball cards.
2) Yes, the odds of getting something better is greater in hobby than retail.
3) RC are still technically RC. Just that they are overprinted today so they don't hold as much value as the ones from 50 yrs ago.
