Collecting Help
Wanna get some opinions here, trying to decide what would be the best path for me.
As most or some or none of you know I have been working on the MVP 09-10 master set for around a year now. Like it says in my signature I'm about 2/3's of the way through. I have completed all the base/insert and rookie sets and I'm missing 5 two on two jerseys and about 90 gold scripts. I'm also missing around 35-40 one on one autos (only about 53 in the set) and I'm missing around 300 super scripts (394 in the set).
My question is do you guys think it would be best to stop collecting the super scripts and one on one autos?
My reason for thinking of doing this is because the super scripts are becoming much more rare and expensive to pursue and I'm always uncomfortable paying 5$ per common card as that would end up costing like 1500$ plus premium on some of the better guys like tavares and duchene.
Also the one on one autos which are also extremely rare and when a big name comes up, they go for a lot, some can go for near 100$ and I'm quite uncomfortable spending that kind of money on a dual sticker auto.
I think I would much prefer spending that kind of money on my Joe Thornton collection, a player I am truly pationate about collecting.
I know it sounds like I may be answering my own question here as the only upside I can think of as to sticking with the whole master set is that it would be an amazing accomplishment if I could get everything.
What I want to hear from other members (if you're still reading at this point) is what do you guys think? Are there any other positive thoughts to sticking with the super scripts and one on one autos?
Comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

It definitely sounds like you're already leaning in the direction of moving away from doing the complete master set and focusing on your primary PC passion. When it comes to a low-end set like that, you can always just make it a long-term project and low on the priority scale. I understand that with some of those /25 Super Scripts they're not going to be appear super-frequently so you're pretty much required to jump on them as soon as you see them, and that diverts funds away from the other collections. Tough call but you have to go with the passion over a project that sounds like it's becoming more of an obligation.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

From my point of view, I'd be more impressed if you completed the master set than if you got some nice Thorton cards.

It's a really cool project. It does sound to me like you're already leaning towards dropping it..... and focusing more on Thornton.
It may be another decade before you'll see a copy of all of those Super Scripts (I'm still hunting for a Ranford Super Script from 98-99!). If that kind of a time frame doesn't work for you, you might have been a little unrealistic when you started out??

yeah I guess I'd say that I wasn't aware of the time and money it would take to finish the master set when I had first started...I'm just thinking in the long run once I finish the set I'm not sure what I would do with it. I'm not that attached to the set I just thought it would be something fun where I could break the occasional box and get some of my set needs but now that I have basically all the common cards I'm never getting anything I need in the boxes I break and it has just come down to buying everything I need. I don't have that much money to spend and when I get some I much prefer spending it on Thornton, the player I have grown up liking and now have a sort of attachment to his cards...I'll definitely have to think this through a bit more

seems like you have already made your choice!!
I'm presently working on the 1995-96 Topps master set. I've decided to NOT go after the OPC parrallel's because they are tough to find and when you do even common's are a few dollars each. I know one collector on here who completed it but he said it took him years, time and money to do it.
What I have decided to do is pick them up when I come across them for a good price so maybe one day I might be lucky and finish the set. So maybe you could do the same. Slowly go after what you need. I know years from now (5-10 years) most of the stuff will drop in price as more product comes out and people forget about the older stuff.
What I've learned from this hobby is to never sell/trade/get rid of anything you have collected seriously at one point because down the road you will regret it.
Put the MVP set on the back burner for now and focus on Thornton. When you find cards you need for the MVP set for dirt cheap, pick them up!
A guy I know on another board spent 20 YEARS putting together an autographed IP/TTM 88-89 OPC set.
Good luck with what you decide, regardless make sure your choice will leave you enjoying the hobby!

yeah I guess I could try and do it that way. I could put it on the low priority list and pick them up when I can...might do that actually, it is getting tougher and tougher to make my decision now. I don't want to regret getting rid of all those cards....
