I live there.
Thankfully, since I am still over by Springfield on vacation, I missed it all. I called my family back home, and amazingly, they were all spared; even the house was undamaged! They are out of power, but the generator is working, and I was able to get a hold of my dad's cell while he's at work (his workplace was also spared).
You can not imagine the panic I had this morning when I read about the 89 deaths and hundreds of buildings destroyed. I ran out and made some calls immediately. I'm now catching up on all the online messages to me and my family. Thank you all for your concern; I just hope no one I know well from the city died. I still have to brace myself for others who may be harmed or dead that I know. :(

I am from Joplin and live in Webb City. I went to find my cousin last night. She lived on 23rd by the Hospital. We couldn't get past 20Th in a car, so we had to park and walk. They said to not try to call your loved ones, but to text them because text have a better chance of getting through.
Have you seen this website maybe your friends have checked in https://safeandwell.communityos.org/cms/index.php

I live outside of Kansas City, MO. I'm a weather "geek" and was following the storm coverage live. Just a horrific event, really hope everything goes well for you and you get in contact with your friends. Although there was a warning issued 30 minutes in advance, the tornado was completely rain-wrapped and could not be distinguished. This was likely an EF-5 tornado, the strongest category, though it is not official yet. What's really bad is that there is another risk for severe weather, and likely tornadoes near the same region tomorrow. Everyone in the eastern Kansas, west and SW Missouri and northern Oklahoma need to be aware and heed any warnings and watches. Really hoping everyone is okay, and please be safe everyone.

I have heard from people that said that the sirens in some places malfunctioned and did not go off. My cousin who lived by the Hospital said the sirens went off less that 5 minutes before they were hit. Where I was In Webb City the sirens didn't even go off.
