what makes cards valueble?

I collect cuz its fun and like chasing cards I want or like and nothing compares to pulling a great card out of a pack.

Its valuable because of the look on my sons face when he tears open a pack of cards and I remember when I was a kid doing the same thing. It's kinda like a gold hunt.

But the thing is now this hobby is not for kids anymore ..just look at the prices

of course not, I enjoy it every bit as much as my son. But it's a different hobby and a different value for everybody. I almost never buy individual cards, for us its the thrill of opening the packs and getting the "hit" and the father/son time we spend together sorting and looking them up and then watching the games and talking about which players we have the good cards for.

But I guess that's my definition of "value". The OP wanted more a definitive reason as to why cards are actually worth money. For the same reason a rare coin or stamp is worth more then its face value. Because it's worth something to somebody else.

I collect for three reasons:
1. I respect the guys that I collect.. I have met and talked with them and they treated me like a person. not like a fan who they meet in passing, but a conversation as an equal

2. The hobby..we all have them..lets see Ive collected coins,snakes,trophies,jerseys and now cards.(this one is by far the least expensive and a lot more fun.)

3. Education.. yeah education... I bet I can name most teams starting lineup and a few pitchers for the past 10-15 years...can't say that for football or basketball unless we are talking about my favorite teams Saints and Celtics....But Baseball, I got covered,thanks to collecting, and the Love of the game.
