Mark Recchi's great escape
By Ron Borges
No one has to tell Mark Recchi what time it is, even though many people are trying. He knows it’s the final curtain call.
There is not another 43-year-old player in the NHL for a reason. If you wonder what it is, go watch someone like 19-year-old Tyler Seguin skate. After a few minutes, it’s obvious.
Hockey is a game of speed, power and grace, a game one can play at the highest level for a finite period of time and no more. The end of that time has come for Recchi even as he prepares for the start of the Stanley Cup finals tomorrow night against the Vancouver Canucks. Somewhere buried deep below the bedrock of competitiveness and the falsehoods of denial, the aging athlete hears the clock ticking.
