It's hard to make money buying & selling cards. With the internet, and eBay in particular, most collectors are pretty savy when it comes to values. You need to be a step ahead of them and know who the flavor of the minute is and be able to grab them and move them quickly to capitalize.... (ie... Melky Cabrera).
This is, of course, null and void if you have an outlet to buy cards at wholesale (ie.. a shop or possibly setting up at frequent shows). This provides the opportunity to purchase from people who may be in a bind and need to sell quickly.
They say, it takes money to make money. This is very true with cards like everything else. Who do you think makes the most off cards (aside from the manufacturers), the guy who busts tons of wax or the guy who sells him the wax?

Interesting post folks. I agree that only the rich get richer, and pulling a 1/1 that you are willing to sell is another way! As some of you may already know (by reading a few of my posts), I have been on mobilized Active Duty for almost 3 years now and have just about missed everything. What I have immediately noticed upon my return is that the GU and LIMITED cards are ridiculously overpriced, and the LEGENDS and VINTAGE material is extremely undervalued. I thought that the hobby would have rebounded somewhat, but it has not. I have learned enough from the past not to get too sucked up into buying what's HOT now, because when all the dust settles (i.e. values have sunk), you are stuck holding less valuable pieces of dufex (or whatever they are currently being made out of). Maybe I am just an old fart, but when an exceptional QB like Peyton Manning outsells and outvalues a bonafide legend like John Unitas, something is seriously wrong. Just my 3 cents worth folks. Anybody agree...or disagree?
Thanks for reading,
Steven

I agee with you 110% heroes! Back when I was a kid, not to long ago, I thought i would collect these cards, and make some money when i get older (Like most kinds think) So i stopped collecting in about 1998, and when I got back into it, for some reason, all my cards were worth less than the Ink they were printed with. I was stuck with a bunch of cardboard.
I guess its all about "Who's Hot and Who's Not" Its kinda like trading stocks, to some extent, Sell HIGH! Im not sure what else to say about it. When i was 7, i thought by now i would be a millionare with these cards.

mtc... you DISAGREE? Please re-read what you had written! It appears that you DO agree with me. Your statement,
"Back when I was a kid, NOT TO LONG AGO, I thought I would collect these cards, and make some money when I get older (like most kids think). So I stopped collecting in about 1998, and when I got back into it (for some reason) all my cards were WORTH LESS than the ink they were printed with. I was stuck with a bunch of cardboard."
That in itself is what "most" of todays cards will also revert to (unless it is autographed). There is such a SUPER-SATURATION of Game Used stuff that in a few more years, nobody will even want this stuff! They also destroyed the limited card concept with the 1 of 1 issue. What is that!?! A card that only one person can own - dumb idea! Profitable? Yes. Until, that is, the true COLLECTORS catch on and stop buying into this business trap.
Hot products of the past...'89 Score (NFL) and UD (MLB), '90 Leaf, Bowman, Zenith, SPx, all these sets sold for well over $100 just a few years ago, but now...nothing. Practically worthless. They say that history repeats itself. Just watch!
What am I doing here? Simple, I "COLLECT" cards. I brought my son along, because we are in it for the FUN of it. If you are looking to make $$$, then I suggest you buy FLEER! LOL! Just my 3 cents worth. Enjoy life!
Peace,
Steve
