Pinnacle Artist Proof
I got a 10/11 pack of pinnacle today, had some nice htis, including a nikolai kulemin artist proof card.
My dad brought up something interesting. He said that Artist Proof should be a 1/1 because the designer stamps that card as exactly what he wants it to look like, then prints off base cards for the set. I told him it's just a catchy subset name, and that its not really "Artist Proof".
He then goes on to tell me how card companies are ripping us off because "Artist Proof" cards aren't worth any more than base set cards.
I then looked up that an Artist Proof insert comes (1) in every $75 hobby box.
Any Thoughts?

cam,
let's look at the definition of artist proof
An artist's proof is, at least in theory, an impression of a print taken in the printmaking process to see the current printing state of a plate while the plate (or stone, or woodblock...) is being worked on by the artist. A proof may show a clearly incomplete image, often called a working proof or trial impression, but in modern practice is usually used to describe an impression of the finished work that is identical to the numbered copies.[1] There can also be printer's proofs which are taken for the printer to see how the image is printing, or are final impressions the printer is allowed to keep; but normally the term "artist's proof" would cover both cases.
Artist's proofs are not included in the count of a limited edition, and sometimes the number of artist's proofs, which belong to the artist, can be surprisingly high at twenty or more. By convention, the artist is not supposed to sell these at once.
I bolded part of the paragraph above that says it can be 20 or more. This would make your dad's logic not quite true when he states artist proofs should be one of ones. I take this even further as even printing plates are not always true one of ones. As sometimes during a print run of any card the manufacturer can go through more than one printing plate (hence more than one printing plate actually exist). Of course I hope the card manufacturer only puts one in the product when released.
As for your dad saying the card companies are ripping off collectors. I guess it's how one looks at. Why do you collect?
I think most of us know what we are getting when we buy boxes (odds are stated on the box). As you candidly pointed the insertion ratio for the artist proof. So if you knew this you definitely know you're not getting a one-of-one as your dad stated above.
Just enjoy the hobby.
