One more note - the "Highest Published Price" thing is a bit jibberish, but I can fairly well assure you that they rely mostly on Beckett now - the prices are almost always exactly the same as Beckett (though I don't think they would officially tell you that). This is a change from when the program originally came out - then they had a deal with another magazine. The one thing I'm not sure that they do is update all the prices as Beckett changes them - they seem to do this on newer stuff, but older stuff might take a little longer to be updated after Beckett updates their prices (which is fairlly infrequent anyway). Occasionally they have obvious typos in prices and you can correct these and then either:

    1) Hit the "No Update" box so that future updates don't change the price of that card - UPDATE 7/26 - I just realized this feature is no longer in the program (that I can find anyhow). They may put it back at some point though. Option 2 is quick and painless, though - used it several times.
    2) Let them know so that they can change it in their database and in won't reset it on your next price update.

kgpittm, it sure does answer alot of questions. Thanks a lot!

We have decided to go with that program. I particularly like the ability to quickly mark sets, rather than deal with every card.

I am finding from the first sample of boxes most contain sets (runs?), their completeness of some question. However, it would be easy (but, like everything, time consuming) to put high-value runs in sequential order, packed in boxes by manufacurer and year, on shelving in my workshop.

Taking the time to catalog to this extend serves two purposes: ease of entry into a database and keeping track of the physical inventory. Clicking on a manufacturer's card number in a set is much easier data entry than any other alternative. A third purpose, I would think, to catalogging to this extent would be the added value of knowing what is in a set, complete or not.

Thanks again for all of the great suggestions, and for the detailed information regarding the Card Collector software!

    hey sheesh,
not to pimp my ebay store, but feel free to check that out. It sounds like you will have the same sort of stuff that I do. That may give you some ideas and rough estimates of what things will sell for.

as far as organizing set cards, I thinknn you'll find it very time consuming without much pay off. It seems to me that with 3 millions cards, you'll need to sell different sized lots in bulk rather than individual set cards here and there to various collector's. Also, most collector's are putting game used and autograph sets together rather than sets of the base cards.

    good luck,
    mark

    It's cool :)

I am hoping to be strategic with the boxes. It is quite possible that the '90s cards will be sold as lots. However, since the cards are already in some order, I am hoping to start catalogging from the oldest cards, first. They have more value. I believe there are full sets from the '60s and '70s in this mountain, including many other singles, perhaps sets, from the '30s-'50s. We'll see.

But, I do agree not to waste my time on essentially valueless cards.

Thanks again! And, I will, indeed, check out your site.
