    dealer scam?

anyone think dealers open a box, open the packs until they get the guaranteed gu/autos and put the rest out for sale?I'm suspecting a dealer i went to yesterday because i spent 70 bucks on assorted packs and got nada. They were higher end(past time pennants, mlb artifacts) as well.then again maybe im just extremely unlucky. Its not like i have unlimited funds to spend on cards and i was expecting at least a low end gu or something.Thoughts?

If his display cases are loaded with inserts from the type of packs you bought, it sure would seem to be what he is doing; and I know some do, I've even seen a guy who would set up at local shows and brag about how he obtained all his many inserts and gu stuff by doing exactly that.

yeah he has like a bunch of autos and patches from the same sets that are for sale.Hes got the packs in a plastic thing that you take them out of the bottom and probably 3 to 4 boxes worth of packs so its defintely possible he does that, its a pretty sorry way of doing business if you ask me.

Unfortunely, it's not illegal just unethical. The guy I mentioned no longer does shows, it seemed no one wanted what he had for sale (he was always high book to boot). It looks like he's paid for his behavior. The same will probably happen to your dealer.

That's why I'm not crazy about buying even sealed boxes on Ebay because a lot of those cut signature cards are one per case, and of course the rest of the boxes with nothing in them are sold. That's also why sealed cases of certain products will also sell for more than individual boxes

I'm sure many of the sellers on ebay do the same, bust boxes of stuff and sell the high end inserts as singles then put the rest in team and player lots. As long as the same sellers do advertise unopened packs, I'm not against that. It's a boon for player and team collector's like me who don't have the resources to puchase many boxes and just like cards of their favaorite player or team.

Those plastic things are a dead giveaway. I know exactly what you're talking about. You don't know how many boxes he opened to get all those packs. Honest dealers leave their packs in boxes and sell the packs until the box is done.
My favorite honest dealer opens the factory sealed boxes in front of the customers, and he only sells singles that he bought from customers.

I heard dealers used to do that with 1989 Upper Deck Griffeys...I don't think dealers can completely do it w/GU. for example.

If that box states "4 GU/Autos per box on average"... If there are 24 packs in the box that means there is a 1 in 6 chance of pulling one from a pack. OK, hypothetically say the dealer pulls the 4 "guaranteed" GU/Autos in the first four packs there are still 20 more packs that have a 1 in 6 chance of pulling something.

So if these dealers take out the 4 GU and sell the rest of the packs you can still pull GU out of those 'extra' packs. I've opened boxes that had 3 GU and I've opened boxes and have pulled 7 GU...when the box states 4 GU/box.

any scammer doing this sort of thing of course knows how to feel packs they arnt just getting the autos and game used by luck. so if the box has 7 he will make sure to get all 7.
