Ethanol gas
Hi all,
I lived/worked in Washington state for over 10 year be for relocating to OK, Everybody here is up in arms about there gas having Ethanol, they are blaming all the problems with the gas, it is to the point where most of the gas station here are selling gas without ethanol in it. most people will not even go to a gas station where ethanol is being used.
They have had car dealers and mechanic say there engine will not run on ethanol or it broke because of it

Short and sweet, Ethanol is distilled and in that process water is also used so here are the cons.
Ethanol basically is a form of alcohol, and as alcohol it attracts water, not only in your vehicle but also from the distillery process until it's delivered to your tank.
Water will and does clog your filters, causes unnecessary corrosion and as it is ingested into the engine can and over a period of time will cause damage.
Ethanol basically is a form of alcohol, and as alcohol it will cause deterioration in rubber and chemical based hoses and lines. Bad news as that residue from deterioration is also ingested and on the way to the cylinder it does no good to everything it touches.
Ethanol basically is a form of alcohol, and as such it burns pretty quick, without going deep, gas engines burn gasoline, during a cylinders ignition the gasoline ignites causing the compression stroke of the engine and that explosion must be precise for performance, meaning for your engine to run smooth at all RPM's. Ethanol burns faster, over a period your engine will not perform as designed.
As it does burn at a higher rate, even a 10% blend, there goes your fuel economy and in some vehicles it is noticeable.
Overall the cons outweigh the pros substantially and most knowledgeable engine people will advise to not use it when you have a choice.
Only a few answers, but the important ones.
Our EPA not only has no clue, they have no common sense.
If you can stay away.

That make since, but been running ethanol for over 10 years in Wa, and had no problem there has been reports here in Ok some engines only lasted a year or to///why would it be so diff from one state to another
Could the high temps in Ok have anything to do with it???

I'd say any engine that only lasted a year or two already had problems and the owner is blaming it on ethanol incorrectly. Ethanol may have helped contribute to the issue, but that alone will not ruin an engine in a year or two. The vast majority of all gas stations have ethanol in their gas today and the vast majority of cars use it. If that were the case, the engine rebuilding business would be skyrocketing.

Your 100% correct that their are many contributing factors in any engines demise, some engines however due to their age, control settings, additional components and overall use even more so in older vehicles will have a level of detonation that is caused by ethanol and other contributing factors. I have seen holes burnt in tops of pistons, rings lands burnt off and their is no other determining factor in that irregular detonation other than detonation. Your still right you never really know what is the true cause. Bigger problem in the east and north central due to climate changes. Check this link out that gives you a good explanation of the virtues. I always say keep your car well maintained, good plugs and wires etc..
