Hello from Nebraska
Hey, I'm John, I'm a 20 year old (in 2 days) from Omaha, Nebraska. I attend UNL in the fall and spring, and am an active member of Lambda Chi Alpha. My favorite sport is college football, and my second favorite sport is NHL Hockey, with my preferred teams being the Nebraska Cornhuskers (obviously) and the Pittsburgh Penguins, respectively.
Earlier today (or yesterday, I guess) I was in Kansas City with my family on a little vacation before I head back to school in mid-August. While there, I caught a Royals game. Now, I've been to a few MLB games before, but, I really wasn't in the "interested in following a different sport mentality" at the time. This time was different. I have yet to choose a team, will probably support the Cards (I was born near St. Louis. I'll explain why I'm not a Blues fan first after I explain why I joined.)
In addition to starting to get more interested in baseball, I decided on picking up a new hobby as well. I picked up my first pack of baseball cards today, a 2011 Topps Diamond Anniversary pack, 1st series out of 2. They're nice cards, nothing exciting outside of a reprint of a 1974 Mike Schmidt #283 card, which I saw going for $12 (the reprint that is) on Ebay, although I can't help but feel that's overpriced. I also have a few Penguins cards from the 1990s from a friend, they're nothing particularly special, but they are fun to have. I wanted a place where I could discuss card collecting, and this seemed like a good place.
As for why I'm a Penguins fan, I fell in love with the sport of hockey in Feb. 2009 after watching some of my high school friends play at club level hockey games. I did like the Blues (and I still have a soft spot for them), but I wanted a team that I knew would have some fellow diehard (I say that because once I'm into a sport and team, I'm diehard) supporters to watch games with, and I knew some buddies of mine from high school football were huge Penguins fans since the 90s. So, I watched a few games with them, and, well, there you have it.
Now, when it comes to the NFL, my family are Patriots fans, and I like them, but I don't really follow it, nor do I pretend to be a diehard fan. I kind of like the Lions as well because of Ndamukong Suh. I like the Rams as well (St. Louis connection)
As for the NBA, I have no interest in it or am a fan of any teams. I don't know why, but I just can't get into pro basketball, it just kind of bores me. Too much offense, not enough defense, I feel. If you like the NBA, that's cool, and I don't hate pro basketball, I'll watch it if I'm bored and it's on TV. It doesn't help that there aren't really any close NBA teams outside of the Timberwolves, the Nuggets, and the Bulls, and even then they're a good ways away from Omaha.
As for other sports, I can enjoy a good soccer match, and I'll watch a little golf.
As for musical tastes, I am all about classic and hard rock. Favorite band is AC/DC.
I am a politically active person of the conservative bent, but I'm not too interested in discussing politics here.
Nice to meet you all, and any questions that aren't too personal?

Hey John.......Welcome to SCF and thanks for the informative post......learned a lot about you in just reading the one post!
I hear ya about the NBA......I followed it pretty heavily in the early 90's when the NY Knocks were pretty good, but I, like you, have a tough time watching basketball for any extended period of time.
I also always find it interesting to find out why people like the teams they do. I would never have pegged you as Penguins fan, but they are an exciting team.....Hopefully, Crosby can come back healthy. That would be the biggest travesty in hockey to not see him play again.
Anyway, thanks for joining and if you are up to it we have a New Member Chat on each Tuesday night at 8 PM EST. Join us if you can!
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out and as far as personal questions go, I will talk about anything as long as it is within the rules of the site!
Thanks,
Billy
