SPX vs. SP Authentic
Sorry for the n00b like question but the guy at my local store was more of a Pokemon schill than a sports card dealer, but what are the significant differences SP Authentic and SPX? All he said was SPX was more expensive... as if I couldnt tell from the $179 he wanted for the SPX vs. the $144 for the SP authentic! I did a forum search and google search as well and couldnt get anything concrete.

SPX will give you more hits, but most of them are Jersey hits and the autos are stickers. Every BOx will give you at least:
1 rookie materials non auto
1 rookie materials auto
1 winning combos (2 player jersey card)
1 winning materials (single player Jersey card)
1 SPX rookie (non Jersey or auto)
1 Finite Rookies
4 SP Xitements (inserts /999)
PLUS 2010-11 SPX has a bonus pack of ICE in it (3 base cards + 1 Ice RC)
SPA will give you the following guaranteed hits:
3 Autos per box, at least 1 will be a RC
2 non auto RC's
4 SP Essentials inserts (/1999)
All autos in this product will be hard signed.
Hopefully that helps.

Well that certainly clears things up... except for one thing.
If the SPA is hard signed, is SPX a stamp/ sticker kinda of thing?

If that is the case.. which one is "better" -- does it come down to preference or is there a definitive change in value?

Most people will agree that SP Authentic is one of those "staple" products every year.
Most people will also tell you that the hard signed auto rookies in SPA are more desirable than the stickers in SPx.
But, in my opinion ....
SPx @ $179 = Rip off
SPA @ $144 = Rip off

Well, let's put it this way, I'd feel much more comfortable buying it by box than by pack. There's no way I'm going to buy one SPA pack full of all base for $5.99. Given a choice between SPA and Contenders (about the same price-wise) I'll go for Contenders any day of the week simply because you have a greater chance of inserts per pack than SPA.

Oh, trust me I felt like an idiot when I did a total impulse buy on the SPA box and then go on eBay and see it for $50 less :s
That being said, is there a max retail I should be looking at? I don't mind paying retail inflation as long as it isnt as bad as that $144 + VAT.
But thanks for the tips, even though I will get less hits with SPA I think I will stay with it. The hard signature seems to be my kinda deal!

I've seen SPA priced at $8.99 a pack. I don't think there is a roof on what LCS's will sell for. Everybody, ultimately, is out to make a buck, right?
They know we're going to buy, so they set their prices accordingly.
Boxes are a WAY better investment than doing it by the pack. Just like buying a pack is WAY cheaper than trying to buy by the card. If you can afford it, a case would significantly lower the cost per pack/box.
I've never been able to do that, but, one day.....
Just my 2 cents.
