I think it's unavoidable that in the future insert cards will feature a tiny LCD/LED screen that will play video. The problem with this particular card is that it's bulky. Plus it's made of ugly hard plastic when we're used to cards made of plain old cardboard, acetate and plexiglass. I'm of the opinion that hard plastic is not a material that belongs in sports card manufacturing. I would opt for plexiglass. I think using see-through materials for electronic components is awesome.
Unfortunately we're not at a point where putting a screen on a card will give it a nice overall look and feel. The technology to achieve this does exist (tiny pliable paper-thin LED's coupled with NAND memory and small speaker), but it hasn't hit mainstream market because it still costs too much to produce. The other problem is what to play on that tiny screen. 10 seconds worth of video? That's not impressive at all. I honestly think that these screens should have player stats, pictures and a 1-2 minute "best plays" video and maybe even a "live" segment made exclusively for these cards. Finish this off with a protective plastic cover (which could be replaced by a sleeve later on) and you end up with a card that looks a lot like the Trilogy plexi cards. The last part of this operation would be to design a system to change the battery that wouldn't damage the card.
Anyhoo, I think cards like those will be a riot in the future!

If you don't classify it as a card, it's still a cool surprise if you yank a redemption for one.
Why can't it co-exist within a card product? Not getting the high anxiety over it. If you are lucky enough to receive one throw it on ebay and go buy 250-300 bucks worth of groceries.

I think it is a cool idea. Not THAT much thicker than some of the stuff available now (anyone who has a 8 player patch card from SPGU, or a The Cup Draft Board knows what I am talking about) and frankly, I think tis version is LEAPS AND BOUNDS closer to being a trading card than the garbage version that Upper deck released this year.

It's a novelty item and not a complement nor a replacement to cards. It will be one of those things they insert for a couple years and drop later on as it will become a matter of cost to perfect it the way people want it.
They should stick to perfecting the hobby with what I said unique designs, bringing a connection with the sport not digitally! Expand on the realm with the new ideas such as draft boards, booklets... Those things are pretty cool and whole "collecting theme" is there. It's tied to the physical game and that these digital images don't bring. I like printing plates more these cause I still see a connection.
Somethings are meant to get a certain level and stay there before it brings no meaning.
This thing is decent as something to play around with for 1 or 2 years, if it is sticking around... I don't see a point in collecting it and any "new" products for that matter. Not everything new is good for the hobby. I can frankly see this killing the hobby cause eventually things get too expensive, companies get overly excited in the beginning, and the whole original purpose/meaning of the hobby is gone.
I'll go spend my money on useful technology and not a tiny autographed digital piece of junk.Last edited by Yipper; 08-11-2011 at 01:27 PM.

I wouldn't complain if I pulled one. But I wouldn't pay hundreds of dollars for one either.
