Dan Hardy - Job on the line?

Just wondering if you guys think Hardy will be cut if he loses Sunday? It would be his 4th in a row and from what I can see, anyone with 3 almost always gets cut, 4 everytime. However, his 3 losses have been against top guys, GSP, Condit and Rumble. He seems to have a pretty big following. Seems like Dana loves the dude. I know his cards on the bay still sell pretty good. He is the only guy I collect.

He will be cut if he losses Dana Even said something like, you lose 4 your definitively out. But it won't be a problem Lyle has slowed down considerably and easy pickings for Hardy.

I'd originally posted this on Hobby Insider a few days back...but my thoughts on the fight:

I've got my fingers crossed for Dan Hardy. I gained a new level of appreciation for him during the GSP fight for refusing to quit, and I don't want to see this be the end of his trail in the UFC, though I'm sure he'll get signed to BAMMA in a second and find his way back to the show quickly.

Lytle, on the other hand is basically the UFC's version of Pat Healy but 10 years older and with less upside...he finds a way to toil in the middle and look good doing it, but he's not headed anywhere. Do you seriously see 37 year old Lytle pushing his way into title contention? I don't. Lytle doesn't win his big fights. He's always going to defeat the Matt Browns and Kyle Bradleys of the world, but when's the last time he won a fight he needed to push him to the next level? Never. He was rounding a corner and lost to Karo Parisyan. He was rounding a corner and lost to one of the Thiagos. He was rounding a corner and he lost his last fight (I don't remember to whom, but it was a stand-in.) Lytle really has nothing to lose. This fight might pit him against who...the winner of Matt Wiman/Mac Danzig? A win for Hardy might get him going against one of the top 5 in the division, or a guy like Martin Kampmann, who is probably going to be back from injury by the time Hardy's ready for his next fight.

That being said...Hardy hasn't trained one second in wrestling all camp, so if it goes to the ground, Chris Lytle might get a pretty quick submission on and win. This I doubt though...Hardy's a pretty bright guy, so I'm sure he knows what could happen. Lytle's pulled some wack submissions out of his ™™™ before...just go back and watch the Tiki fight and scratch your head in amazement.

thats what I hate about dana and the ufc, regaurdless if the fighter wins or not. such as dan hardy and chuck liddell just to name a few, they should not be cut based on a losing slump. bottom line, pro fighter or not everyone cant be a georges st pierre or an anderson silva and win almost every fight, because one punch can end a fight, such as st pierre getting caught with a punch by matt serra, serra isnt the better fighter, but georges got caught, and it can happen at any time. when the fighter stops performing, thats when ya pull the plug! chuck liddell was winning the franklin fight and got caught, it couldve happened to franklin as well. people like lesnar, liddell, hardy,leben,belfort, come to bang and thats what me as a fan wants to see. these blood and guts warriors put asses in seats period, who the hell wants to see anderson silva get taken down and pull guard most the fight, chael sonnen exposed that loser, its like all his fights are hand picked for him, put a striker in front of him that comes foward,thats when hes at his best, just ask vitor,irvin,griffin,leben, andersons days are numbered. but anyways Im sick of dana, if they are in a slump atleast let them fight on under cards or leave them as fill in's if a fighter were to get injured, but stop cutting these guys, keep them on a fight to fight commission not under contract, win or lose I still like the thrill of the fight

Wow...where to begin. Chuck Liddell wasn't "cut/forced into retirement" because he lost the Franklin fight. He lost 5 of his last 6 fights, 2 of which were by highlight reel KO, and the other 2 of which were by stellar TKO. He could easily have lost the Wanderlei fight as well. Liddell's chin started to weaken slightly the first time he fought Rampage, and after the second go around with Rampage, it was rapidly weakening. It becomes a question of fighter safety after a while, and clearly, it wasn't in Chuck's best interest for his health to keep fighting like that.

Wanderlei's in the exact same boat right now. You could see punches affecting him more as early as the Kazahiro Nakamura fight, and once Cro Cop knocked him out cold in 2006, it's started to diminish to what you saw against Leben.

As for your theory that Silva's fights are hand picked for him? It's hard to hand pick top contenders. Every one of those opponents he's faced off with for the title (with the exception of maybe Belfort) was basically the #1 contender at the time who had not fought for the title (there are better cases for guys like Thales Leites or Damian Maia, but they'd had their title shot already.) Some of the fighters were guaranteed dead in the water when you saw the matchup (Thales Leites, Patrick Cote and I'd say even Damien Maia) but look back to their fight records and you'll see those bouts were far from "hand picked." Again, going back to Leites and Maia, there may have been better choices, but Silva had walked through everybody else who was possibly more deserving. Marquardt probably would've had Maia's shot had Sonnen not beaten him months before.

I'm fine to let fighters get cut and work their way back. If you're good enough, it'll only take a fight or two to return to the UFC. Hell, Karo Parisyan was told he'd never fight in the UFC again, took one fight and was allowed a second chance. Unless you screw up big time and make yourself and the company look bad (ala Nate Marquardt,) Dana's known for giving a few chances. Look how many times Joe Doerksen has been back and forth. He's always said the right things, done the right things and kept out of trouble, and it looks like he's always welcome back. But then look at Junie Browning. The guy gets his shot, screws it up, ™™™™™™s around, and now just missed weight for his fight by 8 pounds. Is a guy like him welcome back, and would you want to keep him around on a fight to fight contract? I'd hope not.

Hardy did not make weight on his first attempt today, seems like a lack of urgency from a fighter on the unemployement line come Monday morning.

Also as he stepped on the scale Lytle handed Dana White a note stating he's retiring after the fight tomorrow night.
