whats the deal with these? some are single diamond, others are double, what does this mean?

The first X cards in the set are "Single Diamond" the next X cards are "Double Diamond" and so on. All RCs are Triple or Quad Diamond.

the double, triple, and quad diamonds are progressively more SP'd than the one before it. With the quads being the most SP.

The players are tiered according to their status - be it in the NHL and/or the hobby.
A common player will get a single diamond card.
A semi-star will be in the double diamonds.
A star gets triple diamonds.
A superstar gets quad diamonds.
Semi-star rookies get triple diamonds.
Star rookies get quad diamonds.
It'll be interested to see what they do with the larger checklist in 2011-12. The official preview says the checklist will have 250 players on it.
