    1988-89 OPC Question

Ok, Im trying to get into hockey after collecting football and basketball for awhile. I was just wondering if the 88-89 OPC set is a decent set with rookies, HOF'ers, etc. Any advice is appreciated.

The biggest rookies in that set seem to be Brendan Shanahan, Pierre Turgeon, Joe Nieuwendyk and, of course, Brett Hull.

Plus you get Wayner's first card as an LA King.

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Many of the Shanny and Hull Rookie Cards from that OPC set are OOF.

Out of Focus. Every 2nd or 3rd card is Uber Blurry. Hopefully you get a good box if you buy one.

You only get the Gretzky Sweater Card in the Topps Set, not the OPC. It books alone at $20.00.

I think you're both sorta right here......

The Topps set has this pic:

One of the few times the Topps card is worth more than the OPC.

Yes. Only the Topps version of that year is known as the "Sweater Card". The OPC version has no designate name.

That is why the Topps issue books for more. Also, Gretzky will not sign his autograph on any Topps Sweater Card if you meet him in person, as was highlighted by one of the SCF members in another thread.

Looks like a good set, anyone know where I can get a box of the OPC or Topps at a reasonable price? I almost bought one on another website until I realized it was just the stickers.

Watch on eBay. They appear from time to time. Prepare to bring your wallet though.

The Topps Box normally goes for between $175.00 and $200.00 and the OPC from $175.00 to $275.00

Interesting that they had two versions and one even gets its own name. Why is it that he won't sign the Topps one? I know that he doesn't do much of anything to do with his time in St. Louis, but to not sign his famous welcome to LA card seems odd.
