Need input on very expensive items!!
buying some baseballs. very hefty amount of cash involved they were from a serious collector that died and passed them down to his son. the coas have been lost. (or maybe never was) either way i want peoples info on these balls, by the stamps and all they check out and if the christy mathewson is a fake its extremely elaborate considering it is on a 1910 tj lynch ball. Please respond as quick as possible. The one i have the biggest question on is the monroe but still would be fine as long as 1 of them is real i will be ok.
top left-ford frick (babe ruth)
top right-william harridge (babe ruth)
bottom left-joe cronin (marilyn monroe/joe dimaggio)
bottom right-TJ Lynch (christy mathewson)
all 4 autos

all 4 stamps

Christy mathewson on 1910 TJ Lynch baseball

babe ruth on 1934-1951 ford c. frick

babe ruth on 1931-1959 william harridge

joe dimaggio/marilyon monroe on 1959-1973 joe cronin

Honestly, I would be very skeptical of this. There are a lot of fakes out there, google Operation Bullpen. Even with COA's I would still be very careful of what you buy, especially players that are dead and gone.

Due To Rules Violations
they look very iffy to me esp the mathewson and the ruths i have 100+ year old autos that are certified and i know are legit diffence is unless they are sealed there would be fadding. that mathewson looks like it was varnished over or something regardless it would have been ink like real ink i know my stuff signed back in the 1900's no matter what the ink is fadded i don't know something about something being too good to be real you didn't mention a price but if i were you i'd talk to them about having them appraised or certified prior to sale so you are safe and they also know what they have.
sorry my 2 cents

I would pay to get them certified
It will give buyers the piece of mind knowing someone professional looked at it.

Here are my thoughts. Getting them certified isn't going to be 100% accurate but if they are real then the son would make tons more money getting them certified rather than selling them as unknown. Is there a reason he hasn't tried to get them authenticated? Because if he doesn't have a reason he is either completely clueless about them or they are totally fake.

I would agree completely. A simple google search would tell him to get the balls checked out so he could make some real money on them.

the two Babe Ruth's side by side easily look fake. I'd also question the Christy Mathewson, the signature should show as much aging as the ball itself but instead it looks like a printed autograph and then the ball aged to look like that era. Here's what the ball might have looked like before the aging treatment

The Ruth's should show more aging too. Overall that amount of time the aging would show and the signature fading would show through.

Doing some more research the Dimaggio/Monroe actually is a replica baseball. There's an exact one on Ebay for a BIN of $275 including the Cronin stamp on it

save the hassle and possible disappointment and do not get theseLast edited by duwal; 08-18-2011 at 04:51 PM.

IMO there all fakes, the two ruths side by side have so many differences in the sig i doubt babe would sign that different, just look at all the flicks and loops and both are completely diff .... Also that mathewson ball is battered, yet the sig is crisp ... Also imo all the sigs look to clear and show no fadin
If i was you, unless i could get the appraised, i wouldnt touch em with a barge pole
