You can always take a break from buying for a while and just enjoy the beginning of the season and talking hockey. A cheaper way rather than buying boxes may be to get in on group buys. If you can find ones where you can get the Wings in the team selections you may be able to grab lots of Detroit base and a few hits for less money.

I had the same sort of attitude a few months ago. I finally put some thought into how much I was spending on hockey cards and realized how ridiculous it was. I have a fair amount of disposable income, but there is just a ton of stuff I'd rather spend my money on and I can no longer justify to myself dropping hundreds (and thousands) of dollars on hockey cards. It doesn't mean I don't like the hobby anymore (I still stick around the boards even though I don't collect), it's just that my interests have shifted for now. Some day they may shift back again and I'll start up another collection, but for now I'm happy with where I'm at.
