Today in Nascar History September 26th:

Winners on this date: Fonty Flock, Gober Sosebee, Herb Thomas, Junior Johnson, Bobby Isaac, Cale Yarborough, Ernie Irvan, Mark Martin, Ryan Newman, and Jimmie Johnson.

September 26th, 1993: Ernie Irvan wins at Martinsville in the famed #28 Havoline car just a few months after replacing Davey Allison, who had tragically passed away in a helicopter accident in July. In victory lane, Ervan pulls off his firesuit to reveal that he was wearing a Davey Allison T-shirt for good luck during the race.

September 26th, 2010: After a 25th place finish to start the Chase, 4 time champion rebounds and wins in dominating fashion at Dover, putting him back in chase contention. It is Johnson’s 6th Dover win.

Today in Nascar History September 27th:

Winners on this date: Rex White, Fred Lorenzen, Darrell Waltrip (2 times), Ricky Rudd, and Jimmie Johnson.

September 27th, 1987: Terry Labonte and Dale Earnhardt crash while battling for the lead on the last lap at Martinsville, allowing Darrell Waltrip to get by and take the victory, his first for Hendrick Motorsports.

September 27th, 1998: Ricky Rudd cements his place in Nascar history as one of the toughest to ever climb in a racecar by winning at Martinsville. Rudd's cooling system goes out early in the race with the temperature nearly 100 degrees in Virginia. The crew's attempts to pour water on Rudd during a pit stop fail as the water gets down onto the seat and boils. Rudd suffers burns and dehydration but stays in the car and holds on for the win. In victory lane, Rudd takes an IV and does his winners interview lying on the ground. (One of my favorite races ever, as a huge Rudd fan this was a great day-what a tough cookie).

September 27th, 2009: Jimmie Johnson dominates at Dover and completes the season sweep at the Monster Mile for 2009. Rookie Joey Logano survives a wild accident in which his car gets upside down and tumbles down the banking early on in the event.

Today in Nascar History September 28th:

Winners on this date: Herb Thomas, Joe Eubanks, Richard Petty, Dave Marcis, Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, Geoff Bodine, Jeff Burton, Michael Waltrip, and Jimmie Johnson.

September 28th, 1952: Herb Thomas wins the 100 mile race at Wilson, NC. The race takes nearly 3 hours to run and has an average speed of 35.398 mph. It is the slowest average speed in Nascar Cup Series history (and probably always will be).

September 28th 1958: Joe Eubanks, who recently came out of retirement, scores his first ever career Grand National (Cup) series victory by winning at Orange Speedway.

September 28th, 1975: Popular driver Dave Marcis takes his first career Cup Series victory by winning the Old Dominion 500 at Martinsville.

September 28th, 1980: Dale Earnhardt takes his 5th career Nascar Cup series victory by winning the Old Dominion 500 at Martinsville. The race is slowed by 17 caution flags, and Earnhardt averages less than 70 mph for the race.

September 28th, 2003: Michael Waltrip holds off teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the field on a late race restart to win a wild race at Talladega. After the checkers a wreck ensues in turn 1. Also, Elliott Sadler survives one of the scariest looking wrecks in Nascar history as he becomes airborne and spins through the Alabama air before tumbling onto the pavement. (definitely remember this one-its shown all the time still lol)

    Elliott Sadler Crash

    Finish

September 28th, 2008: Jimmie Johnson holds off a charging Carl Edwards to win at Kansas. Edwards runs down Johnson with a few laps to go, then tries a banzai move on the last lap by driving into turn 3 and momentarily passing Johnson before smashing into the wall. Edwards said that was the plan but he didn’t think the wall would slow him down as much as it did. (what a great race-part of why I like Carl-I don’t know who else would of tried that-maybe Kyle haha).

September 29th, 1963: Marvin Panch completes his comeback from serious injuries suffered in February at Daytona by winning the 250 miler at North Wilkesboro for the Wood Brothers. It is Panch's first win since the 1961 Daytona 500.

September 29th, 1974: Canadian rookie driver Earl Ross beats Richard Petty to win the Old Dominion 500 at Martinsville. Ross is the first Canadian driver to win a Nascar Grand National (Cup) Series race.

September 29th, 1991: Dale Earnhardt takes advantage of Harry Gant's brake failure to win at North Wilkesboro. Gant was attempting to become the first driver to win 5 straight races since 1971 and was well on his way before the brakes faded.

Today in Nascar History September 30th:

Winners on this date: Fonty Flock, Fireball Roberts, Richard Petty (3 times), Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, and Greg Biffle.

September 30th, 1956: Curtis Turner is declared the winner of the 100 mile convertible race at Asheville after a 14 car crash takes out the whole field except for Turner-Nascar calls the race and declares Turner the winner since there is no one for him to race.

September 30th, 1970: The final dirt track race in Cup Series history is run. Richard Petty wins the race at Raleigh in his Plymouth.

September 30th, 1990: Mark Martin wins at North Wilkesboro. Rookie driver Rob Moroso finishes 21st in the event. A few hours after the race, Moroso is killed in a traffic accident on the highway :(

September 30th, 2001: Jeff Gordon beats Ryan Newman to win the inaugural race at the new Kansas Speedway.

September 30th, 2007: In one of the more odd and drawn out races in Nascar history, Greg Biffle takes the win at Kansas as the race ends under caution due to darkness. Biffle coasts across the line on fumes and finishers behind him argue that Biffle didn’t maintain pace speed and shouldn’t have been given the win. Tony Stewart dominates the first half of the race and the race is stopped due to a massive thunderstorm. When the race resumes a big crash on the restart hurts Stewart's fender and he eventually crashes as a result.
