Manufactured Patch Cards
I suggest that manufactured patch cards be fazed out. UD tried it in their OPC Premier brand and there are similar types of cards in Certified. I have found that collectors do not really latch on to this type of card. They don't have a whole lot of meaning to them. The only place I've seen this type of manufactured card work well was with the flag patches(i.e. UD Black Pride of a Nation). But of course, those were not tied to teams or accomplishments so much.
Panini has just come out with their Elite Black Basketball product and so far collectors seem to be very unhappy with the maunufactured logoman cards... these cards really do resemble the NBA logo on the players' jerseys. Collectors are in fear of mistaking these manufactured ones with real ones.
I hope that Panini does not make a manufactured NHL logoshield card. Hopefully they haven't even thought of doing such a thing. If the response is anything like the response of the NBA card collecting community, it won't happen.
Here's a sample of responses I saw today:

Panini is already using Manufactured Patch cards in their high end hockey products. In Limited the Rookie cards were Autographed Manufactured team logo cards that look like this:

Also had All Star Logo and NHL logo Manufactured auto/patch variations for some players in Limited.
In their highest end hockey product Dominion coming out this week they are re-hashing the All Star Logo Manufactured Auto/Patch design from Limited.

I posted this in Hockey Card Talk...obviously one of the greatest design fails in collecting history. Read the comments...man oh man, tough times Panini.

I like the Phenoms' design. At least the manufactured patches on those cards aren't pretending to be something they're not. Coupled with the on-patch auto, I think they look fantastic!
I do realize that this is only my opinion, however. I didn't like the OPC Premier manufactured patches, but that was mainly because the rest of the cards looked so plain..

Quite a few of this basketball boards comments sound a whole lot like the complaining hockey collector's used to do when UD had the exclusive.

Yeah, I've always hated manufactured patch cards too, but the Limited Phenoms rookies are fine in my book.

Just to say I really like the Limited Phenoms as well. May have overpaid to get my Kadri but I was impatient.

I'm not a big fan of manufactured patch cards. Some look all right (I did like the ones in Limited, and may grab one or two of the Heritage Classic ones in Dominion) but most of the time they just look really bad. The limited window restricts a player's ability to properly sign the cards and they will often bleed into the fabric, so not only do you get a bad signature, you also lose it over time.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...
