Collectors? I think its the people trying to make a quick buck, the collectors, like myself, are the ones who buy the singles on eBay. I know good cards when I see them and Panini very rarely designs a card that I like. But when they do, I will pick it up. What other alternative do I have?

I think the definition and nature of a collector is to collect things. Sure, collectors hold some responsibility to be discerning what product is crap. But. . .
An illustration would be, let's say, a person with hypertension. That person will need to buy blood pressure medication. Now a single drug company just this year bought the rights to the only blood pressure medication in the world, works great and they only need that one single product. However, in years past, several companies made several types of blood pressure meds each year and sold them for around $50 a jar. So now the new company with the single drug decides they need to make 10 different blood pressure medications, with different packaging and labels to make sure they meet the market's needs ( let's say blood pressure meds for the young, and then the old, and then like an Asian blood pressure med or something), the problem ends up being that the company got so caught up in the packaging that they forgot to make the drug effective. So now they try to sell all their 10 products for $50 a jar, the problem is, the drug's not effective and is only worth $10. So now what, the sick people need their drug, but the only seller selling the drug is making a garbage product that's over price. Overtime, some people with hypertension decides to take their chances and stop taking drugs, some people just die off, and some people spends a buttload of money buying ineffective drugs just to try to stay alive.
The company says they are not to blame because there are still people buying the product, so they are making some money and that's all that matters. However, the company also says that making blood pressure medication is hard and for some reason not all that profitable. The company "brand name" also becomes a joke because they are wasting their exclusive license and producing inferior products. Also for some reason, the number of people interested in and buying blood meds are decreasing. People end up buying meds from the former companies because hey at least they know for $50 it would work.
But if that drug company concentrated their efforts in making ONE good product. Client base increases and sustains over longer periods of time. Consumer confidence in the company increases. Brand awareness increases. PROFIT increases. They will have money to keep their exclusive license in the future and would want keep the license too since it's actually PROFITABLE. Also LESS people will die from having high blood pressure (hobby equivalent of LESS people will leave the hobby.)
Instead of making 10 different products, they just needed one product in small, medium, and big jars to make everyone, including themselves happy.
Anyway, but no you're right. The companies should not be blamed. We need to blame the sick people.Last edited by whalechaser; 09-20-2011 at 03:25 AM.

Sorry I wasn't clear with my usage of the word "collectors"... Collectors in this statement implied more along the lines of those who continue to purchase the boxes/cases or consumers who buy first hand from a wholesaler or cardshop etc... Those who love cracking open packs (which seems to be a blast and a half for me when I've got money to burn) Bottom line is regardless who gets the finger pointed at them, there is no reason like I said for companies to flood the market with so many options... It used to be the big thing to find a sweet rookie in a pack or box...then it was serial #'d cards/inserts and not too long after came the wonderful GU/AUTO/RELICS/BODY HAIR/FOSSILS/MANUFACTUER PATCHES etc etc.... Thus creating the world of 87 million products... Basically I'm a "collector" who cracks boxes and packs for the odds of finding a monster hit or trade bait..and if its UD or Topps building a set too... I buy single cards usually for PC items..Sorry for the confusion as it was late, and I should've clarified better ;)

i know ud and topps werent perfect either. but atleast they had a variety to chose from, u know like regular ud and collectors choice etcc.. i didnt have to empty my bank account to buy packs or boxes. what do we get from panini? 55 dollars for season update and then gs or black box etcc.. im not going to pay 150 to 200 dollars just to get 5 to ten cards in a pack or box. and most of the time u pull mediocres players out those boxes. i like to rip packs or boxes every week. and i cant do that with panini. and im tired of buying blasters and pulling the same cards over and over
i think i bought atleast 50 ud blaster boxes and got the blake griffin rookie once. but i got millions of the other rookies. we just need a little more affordable variety from panini. and they have to step their game up those so called autos the have are not cutting it. we get a autogrpahed sticker on a card, not a autographed card

Basketball is being hit the hardest by Panini's monopoly of mediocrity. I really feel bad for you guys. I bought a few Panini basketball products this year, before I stopped buying Panini all together, and I couldn't believe some of the designs that were being released. Flat out slap to the face of the collector. Not only that, but the repeated designs seen across all their products and just flat out disrespect for the customer. How can they release a product like Gold Standard and release autographs that don't fit into the box? I understand that the player is the one signing, but why doesn't Panini recognize that this isn't a complete autograph because it is cut off and not release the product...but hey, it's no problem for Panini, they aren't the one's buying the cards.

The more I think about it, the issue is not Panini anymore. Like you said, it is monopoly issue. I don't even know why NBA only allows 1 card company to run the show. I heard Panini will help the hobby to get more new generations interest. So far, with $100, $250, $350 boxes, I guess teens would just buy a PS3/XBox rather than National Treasures.

Panini did promise something along the lines of that when they first gained the license. I think "Adrenalyn" was their attempt at that and maybe the HRX video box.
The monopoly is an issue in the hands of greedy companies who don't care about the longevity of the hobby (which is pretty much all of them) or people who don't understand the hobby well (Panini); but an exclusive license in the hands of company that knows the hobby, wants the best for the hobby, and is willing to take risks (like cut overproduction) could be a good thing. Panini missed a great opportunity. There was a good number of collectors were initially excited by Panini's takeover due to their good customer service reputation and the possibly of positive changes to the hobby. In addition, lots of people on the fence had no opinions and was willing to give Panini a chance. Honestly, lots of people was sick of UD and Topps. I think as of right now though, Panini has effectively alienated both their initial supporters and the people who were on the fence.

When I first started in this forum I was posting my weekend family box busts. Well as you can guess that fizzled out can't do a box of panini every weekend... I do buy some singles but that takes the whole family out of the fun. I like sitting at the kitchen table and busting the box with the boys and watching the boys open a pack with a hit and even the wife I guess lol now I am just plain bummed... an ocaisonal ud blaster here and there. Need to at least have the design and/or photography desent... I don't even own a logoman but I think most all of us can agree that a manufactured logoman is just sick and wrong! When I saw manu logoman to 99 and dual to 149 felt like they just kicked me in the gut!! I don't know that I would even want to buy one with my favorite players auto on it. Can someone direct me to the panini cuased deprestion theropy group?? ok end rant, thanks for listening definatley sad times for our hobby...
