Proof Cards: Edge 98 XXXII (What are these?)

Every day is a new find.

Yesterday late night, I came upon proofs for a number of Edge 98 XXXII football cards. The cards say Proof on the front. They players are Terrell Davis, Corey Dillon Adrian Murrell, Antwon Smith, Jerome Bettis, Napoleon Kaufman, John Elway, Marcus Allen, Tim Brown, Eddie George, Kordell Stewart, Drew Bledsoe, and Dan Marino. I also have other cards of this kind that do not say proof on them and are far less "glossy" and prisim-like.

What are proofs? Are these collectable?

Thanks again. And, sorry for all the questions, just so many cards....

Dunno. How much for the Bettis and Marino's? I would imagine they're something like promos, probably recieved from printing shops to make sure the design/layout was done correctly.

As I don't know their worth, I'm not willing to part with them quite yet. But, soon, I will have a website up and running with these, and many other cards, available for purchase.

    Thanks!

    Here's your answer -
    Total Item(s): 1
    Total Value :$60.00
1998 Collector's Edge Super Bowl Card Show Proofs 11 Dan Marino NM-MT

The proofs set was the hardest to get -- given out at the 1998 Hawaii Trade Show. There's a base set as well as a Gold foil parallel.

Directly taken from Beckett's FREE My Collection.

You've been asking alot of what's this worth on various trades sites. I've taken some time and answered several for you already, but I really think you need to try and educate yourself a bit also:

1st: Buy a 2004-05 Beckett Annual Price Guide #21 (cover is $24.95 but can be found cheaper on ebay or amazon) I'm a football card geek so I don't leave home without it - j/k - but it contains probably 90% of the answers you are looking for. Read up on what you've missed over the years, learn the names of Card Sets - etc.

2nd: Surf this site as well as others AND of COURSE eBay completed items and checkout what things have sold for. DO some of the research yourself.

3rd: You need a scanner - asking questions without a pics have people stratching their heads and just skipping your post. Also will help when your selling/trading your stuff.

4th: Know what you're saying - Mint mean just that no flaws at all (Centering, color, corner, etc), so not everything is mint (Scanner helps here also)

5th: Nothing is worth a pot of gold, it's all in your head...when you UNDERSTAND this statement YOU WILL enjoy the HOBBY.

DON"T listen to Beckett. Anything like that from Collectors Edge is most likely junk. CE went out of business and liquidated everything they had making most of their stuff worthless. I made the mistake of buying 4 cards that booked $250 each in Beckett for $25 each. Noone even gives them a look... they're worthless. So because of Beckett I wasted $100.

I agree that Collectors Edge, Pacific, and now Fleer stuff have/will continue to take major devaluations. What was the 4 cards you bought? Don't forget you should never BUY just because of BV - it should be because YOU LIKE IT.

The cards I'm guessing were test card or something. They should have never been made. They had stamps from 3 different card sets which I totally didn't notice when looking at the picture.

Well I figured I could make a nice profit off of that much value of cards. I KNEW CE was sketchy but still figured I could get maybe $50 a piece from them considering. The players were Dan Marino, Jerry Rice, John Elway and someone else who is slipping my mind. So that value plus the names got me caught in the moment. A mistake I'll never make again. I ended up giving them away for free because they are worth that much.

Now I'll only buy something to make a slight profit (very rarely) if I'm 100% sure of what it is and how much it's worth... no chances. And besides that I just buy for my personal collection so I could care less what they're worth.

Jade: You are right. I have been asking alot of questions.

I do not have the annual Becketts for all major sports nor do I have a scanner. I do intend on getting both, soon. I do try to do some research myself via the net. Regarding these proofs, I did so and found nothing. I typed into Beckett.com XXXII 1998 Edge proof rather than spelled it out. Nothing came back. And, never said anything about Mint in any post I have made on any site (but I assume these are given their condition).

I'm not a hobbiest. I know very little about the hobby and less about the nomemclature. Frankly, I never understood, from when I was a kid in the '60s until now why in god's name someone would spend hundreds or thousands for a card, but it is what it is.

Regarding a pot of gold, I'm not looking for a pot, but just trying to get rid of 3 million cards that fell in my lap without giving them away. I'm not a purchaser nor a trader. I am a seller and in this business until the last of these 3 million cards are gone. Not everyone is in this thing because they, as you say, "like it". Other than a general glut of cards produced by makers, blame folks like me, in part, for devaluing cards. You can bet I will be selling the 15,000 Pro Set 1990 cards I have sorted for less than 1/2 cent a card; or the chrome, refractors and prisims for less than 1/2 BV. I, litterally, have hundreds of sets from all manufacturers to sell.

But, I knew the proofs were special and asked about them.

Anyway, sorry I ticked you off by asking too many questions. I won't do so regarding specific cards again.

    Thanks for the help.

BTW: Jade, I live in Mariposa, just outside of Yosemite. If you are interested in any cards, gimme a PM. You can check out the cards AND visit the park :)
