    Need some Book Value Input

I know what the market for baseball cards is right now, but I don't know why it is so. Why is it that you can't get book value for any cards right now? You are lucky to get 1/2 it seems. Anyone have an answer?

Selling Value and Book Value is completely different and always has been.

Book Value is for trading ... so when you trade you know the values are similar.

Selling Value is what people will pay for the card. The generally accepted value is about 1/3 - 1/2 of Book Value, but it all depends on what people are willing to pay. Some go for much less and some go for over Book Value.

Book Values are still for some reason calculated via card shop owners and people working for the magazines browsing eBay, etc for "market" value. They take surveys of the shop owners prices etc and put them in the magazines. Card shops I think *still* think they can get book values for stuff.. where on eBay you generally are getting 40% of book if you're lucky.

AND.. like mentioned some go for 'over' BV..

Then there's the 87 Topps Palmeiro rookie card I sold a month ago for $5.50 when the BV was $2.00 .. sometimes you get lucky and people will actually get in a 'bidding war.' Funny thing was there were a number of the readily available Palmeiro listed that weren't getting even $1.50.

The only way I believe you can even come CLOSE to BV anymore is card grading. Beckett and PSA certainly changed the hobby.. whether it's for the better or not we'll find out in 20+ years I figure, when anything from the 50's through 70's that has value will be graded/slabbed.

Well I just saw an SPx Delonte West RC auto/jersey that books for $40 sell for 36+ ship, so I decided to list my Throwback edition which books for $60 and see how I do.

IDK, but I've done decent on the bay as of late selling....

I just sold my 05 Studio Chipper Jones Master Strokes Signature/Jersey/Bat, 5/5 for $145...

Card 3/5, sold 1 week before only sold for $86, so just think how pleasantly surprised I was to come home from work, open up ebay, and see my auction closed so much higher than I could have expected..

I personally think it goes by the buyer too... The guy that won my chipper card is Chipper Jones Collector, so that could be one way at looking at it.

I also sold a UD All World Hockey Mats Naslund 2/10 Autograph to a big Naslund collector in Sweden, once again, it went for over double the amount other /10 autos from that set are going for.

So, go figure.... It really makes no sense to me... I personally think BV's, if anything, should be listed by average sales seen at places such as Ebay, because at least then, a more "realistic" BV could be seen..

I don't think ANY card limited to less than 100 issued.. should have a book value anyway. It also helps to have repeat customers who have a lot of trust in you. I hope hockey cards come back big in the hobby with the new season.... but that's for another topic..
