Sorting Cards

Hello, so I'm not sure if this is the right place for this or not, just curious... I'm a new collector but I've got alot of cards from when i casually collected cards about 10 years ago(when i was a kid). I'm just wanting to know how I should set up all my cards( base included). I've never been to a card show as of yet but I guess my highest interest would be to sort them like they do. Primarily just to make it easy for me to find things when I do sell them. Things' like should i seperate my base rookies from all my base and what to do with parrallels. AS of now I got probably 1k+ pages and 3 boxes ... prepared to be filled.

Also if there's any free collecting software considerations... please tell. Thank You.

If I were you I would sort them out by team or what set the came from. This would be easier for you to search your list for what you have.

If you want them to be easy to find, relatively quickly, sort them by set. Then be sure to sort all the sets by number. But aside from sorting them, you need some way to keep track of what you actually have in your inventory.

Well, do you just plan on sorting star players? Or entire sets? I assume you could just sort them all by player name alphabetically. That makes it super easy for us player collectors to see what you have without having to go thru boxes of other players as a waste of time.

Or do em by year, set, numerically. Whatever way is easier for you to keep track of, and to fulfill your goals.

I have 60,000 cards and the best way is to use boxes sold at card store.

I put them in year, set name and if I have many, by card number.

I put most older RC with the base becaue most are not worth much from the 90's. Now with the newer cards. I put all RC in a trader box where I put all insert paralele, rookie and all cards with attribute in there I sort the by year and carset name.

It's rare I trade for base so I put more effort on all other insert first.

Why put base in one boxe and other in other box, because it easier to search in less box. I have four trader boxes full of only rookie insert paralel and auto jersey patch etc...

I also use SCF inventory and enter all PC and treader. I do have many base but got 25,000 base from the 90 not entered. I done only the hit for that era because not many ask for them. But those entered, once in a while I will trade some.

I use the large 3, 4, & 5 row card board storage boxes that you can pick up at your LCS for a few bucks each and sort my cards I use to trade a few different ways.

For base including non #'d/SP'd RCs I sort them by year, then set, then put them in numerical order. I have started using the BCW trading card dividers (you can buy these from the member JerseyCoast on here) and love them. I just write the year and set (for example "2010 Topps") on the top and put them before the first card of the set to make it very easy to find cards for set builders.

For non base cards like short prints, #'d cards, inserts, parallels, etc... I sort my cards by team and then I try to sort each team by player. For regular RC cards I generally keep them sorted as mentioned above with the set that they belong to but if I notice that I have multiple copies of a certain RC then I will usually take one or two of them and put them in with my non base cards .

For my GU/Jersey cards and Auto cards I have my GU/Jrsy/Patch cards seperate from my Auto cards and then sort them by year and set. The reason I sort these this way as opposed to by team is b/c I have all of my GU/Jrsy and Auto cards scanned in my bucket and when I try to make a trade i'll just ask people to look through my bucket and LMK what they like. When we work a trade out and I know what card they want it's easier for me to find the card having them sorted this way.

I'm sure others have their cards sorted differently but I have found for me that having my cards sorted this way makes it the easiest to find cards when working out trades.



Also, this isn't directly related to your original question but something I thought i'd mention. If you plan on trying to trade/sell cards on this site or others i'd recommend using a photo storage site like photobucket to keep scans of the cards you have for trade (I only scan GU/Jrsy, Patch, and Auto cards but others scan everything). This makes it much easier for other members to see what you have to offer in trade. Also, make sure you keep the photobucket up to date. Some people keep cards in their bucket once they have traded them but mark them as GONE but I personally prefer just to delete cards from my bucket that I have traded away. If you do decide to keep your scans i'd recommend moving them to a seperate folder with all the cards you have traded away. Also, when you upload cards to your "bucket" i'd recommend putting scans of single cards up as opposed to showing multiple cards in a single pic. If you have your cards uploaded to your bucket as single card pics it makes it MUCH EASIER for people to see what you have when trying to trade with you. When I scan my cards to upload i'll scan 6 cards at a time but I then open each scan in microsoft paint and cut, paste, and crop each card scan into an individual image file to upload to photoshop.
