Best Boxes for Son

I'm a new father with a 6 month-old son. I was very much involved in card collecting when I was younger, but not as much now. I had an idea to buy my son a box each year for Christmas, so that as he gets older, we'll have those packs to open together. Are there any suggestions as to what would be a good box to start with? I don't need it to be top-of-the-line, but I also don't want to buy something that is completely over-produced.
I'm also contemplating extending this to basketball and football so recommendations in those areas are also appreciated.

Great idea. I think the normal Topps/Panini/UD boxes are great. Nice looking cards, nice inserts, and a good value.

I would start with a Topps Series 1 or 2 set and work from there. The only downside is you buy them the diamond giveaway codes will be expired.

Sounds like a good idea. When your son get older if he doesn't get into collecting I will gladly be your son for a weekend and open all the boxes with you LOL...all kidding aside it all depends what you like.

I myself collect only football mostly and love Leaf Certified Materials. I believe all sports have Certified except for Racing. It's about middle of the road on pricing and older boxes can be bought for pretty cheap. You can get a wide array of selection as far as base, inserts, autos and game used....

GL on the purchases and I hope when your son is old enough and busts them open with you he has a blast!

Get some of the older topps/UD along with the newer ones. Other than 2001, most of them can be had pretty cheap. Maybe buy one older one with one newer one every year (or every time you get the extra cash and don't really need anything) until you're all the way back to the dime-a-dozen 80s sets. You can get a couple decent hits along the way, plus have plenty of sets to work on.

If you'd rather just bust boxes, plenty of stuff from the middle 2000s can be had real cheap (2002 Topps Gallery or 2003 Fleer Authentix comes to mind; something like that that you can get for $30-50 for a box), and there's always the off-chance you pull something really rare.

This sounds like a good idea to do with maybe Bowman Chrome, in 10 or so years when he is old enough to open the packs with you some of the rookie auto's in Chrome will then be established stars and you may find some real gems in there. Just think if someone would have bought a box from the year Pujols was in there and waited ten years to open it.

Wasn't the Pujols a redemption? They'd have been SOL in that case...
Though I think the redemption card still has value to it, even though Topps destroyed all of the unredeemed ones.
