I do use a sniper (a website that offers the service). I used to just plan to bid at the last second, but I had a few too many times where I forgot about.... weather you're doing it live (yourself) or using software to do it - that's what you need to do though. Put your actual max bid in, during the last few seconds. It will either get you the best price possible...... or you'll get outbid anyway.
As for the early bids - I also like to do that. If the auction is 99 cents.... I might bid a couple of bucks, and then wait until the last second for the snipe.

I could be considered a sniper, What I like to do on auctions is, throw in a bid in with a few minutes left. Then have my "safety net bid" (Actual Max) Which I enter inside the last 10 seconds. I have out-sniped many snipers inside the last few seconds with this tactic. But it has backfired many times when I forget about the "safety bid".
My best advice is just like many others here, if you stick with it, eventually you'll get a copy of what you want.

You have to realize there is always someone out there with more money.
You looking for anyone in particular? Sometimes you can post on here and get a better deal than any where on eBay. I've picked up a couple nice cards on nice deals here, especially if it's not the hottest card on the market like Cam Newton.
