I usually ask when I want one, but I don't call it an "inscription." I dunno I think it makes you sound like a dealer or something. Also, when I ask for an inscription, I always ask him to personalize it as well so he knows it's for me.

So usually I end my letters by saying:

I would appreciate it if you could please sign and return the enclosed card. Thanks and god bless!

So when I want an inscription I write:

I would appreciate it if you could please sign and return the enclosed card. Could you also make it out "to Erik" and write something cool like "5X All Star?" Thanks and god bless!

That's how I've always done it, seems to work pretty well.

There is no harm in asking. They either sign it and personlize it like you requested, sign it without the personalization or don't sign at all. I have only asked twice for inscriptions and am 1 for 2. Whitey Ford signed what I asked for. But I paid. Yogi Berra wrote a note saying he can't.

Yeah Yogi has all kinds of crazy steiner contracts, from what I read it's his kids' attempt to make lots of money off of his signings but still allow him to sign for free for his fans.

I think anything but his signature is contracted, including HOF year, inscriptions, etc etc etc

I generally average about 50% in my requests for inscriptions too. Generally the older players do it more in my experience.

I will say it's kind of weird to ask someone to say best wishes. I feel like that's something that if they write it it should be because they really mean it, not because they are asked and don't really feel that way. That's different than asking for like "5X All Star" or something IMO. Not calling anyone out just saying my piece.

I hardly ask for personalizations nor inscriptions for my TTM requests. I let the person decide on their own to personalize or add any type of inscriptions if they choose to. Not too picky on that since it's all going into my PC anyways. For IP signings, depending on the person, I ask from time to time for an inscription ranging from "Go (their team)", nicknames, career accolades, or for HOF personnels, their HOF induction year. And if they insist on a personalization as well, I have it made out to me.

I do sometimes. Mostly on 8x10s.

Just ask nicely like others have mentioned, most guys will oblige.
