Are hockey fights vicious — or a good release valve?

Brawls on the ice are a staple of professional ice hockey games, but are they as vicious as they look?

A new study suggests that few punches thrown during National Hockey League games end in significant injury.

The study concludes that fighting on skates isn’t particularly dangerous, possibly because it’s hard for players to gain traction on ice to throw a powerful punch, said co-author Dr. David Milzman, an associate professor of emergency medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

i think very few serious injuries stem from fights. Falls to the ice, checked headfirst into boards, high sticks, pucks, more from those.
Also believe that fights are the release valve and possibly take some of the dirty hits and cheap stick work out of the game. The players will police themselves

All the above is part of the game
