Im confused where you say Mikita has the 3rd highest point total. he is 14th on the all time list.
His card likely didn't sell as high cuz its from Panini and not the Cup! simple as that. I'd imagine a Mikita from Cup would go for a lot more than $280.

I simply thing as stated in you post that it's possibly because the newer players have more demand. That's just my opinion.

its hard to compare prices of players on 1 of 1 cards. simply put these cards are only worth what someone would pay for them. There are a lot of super collectors in the hobby. If there are more then one of them that collect the same player it affects these cards drastically. its interesting to keep an eye on the sales of these extremely high end cards. some cards of not so hot players sell for higher amounts then players you think would have a much higher final price. depends on the collectors that chase that player.
