    Did the autograph ruin it?

I had a talk with another autograph hound earlier tonight. We disagreed on an autograpg ruining a sportscard. I will be honest I can not tell you the value of one sportscard in my collection. I collect the cards to get them signed. The card is definately more valuable for me with an autograph on it. He is a card collector first and states that he would never have a rookie card signed, if he had a choice as it ruins the value of the card? In my mind the rookie cards and the final year cards are the bet to get signed. What are your thoughts. Will an autograph IP/TTM ruin a rookie card. Would you pay less for a Michael Jordan RC with a signature that you feel is legit vs an unsigned one in the same condition? Please chime in on this one!

I was thinking about this today..this was an issue years ago with do many people saying it defaces the card... I truly don't think it's an issue anymore and clearly adds value to the card...

I wouldn't buy a Jordan rookie with a signature even if it was graded and verified to be authentic...i would do another one though, something like newer base...

That is a definte vote for a valuable card is better without a sig on it! I still would think it was more vauable and should I have a choice between getting MJ on his RC vs lets say a 1992-93 Topps I would pick RC every time. Let us say he is having a charity autograph signing and asking $200 a autograph and will only sign cards. What card would you pick to get signed. His final card did not show him with the Bulls and who would pay a significant fee to get a card worth a dollar or less signed from the over production era?

I know a lot of people that would not buy a Jordan RC with his signature on it, including me. Me personally, i wouldn't even have him sign my Jordan RC...i think i said the same thing in my last post...call it personal preference, etc...

There is no doubt in my opinion that I would rather have a rookie card signed. Unless, the card is Mint or better. For example, I just picked up a nice Pete Rose RC probably EX-MT ungraded. I cannot wait to spend the 60 bucks to have him sign it. Could I sell it for more unsigned? Probably, but to me it is worth more signed. I was fortunate to receive Rookies cards signed TTM by Cal Ripken, Robin Yount, Gaylord Perry, to name a few. These are all HOFers who did not have "RC AUTOS" available in packs like all the greats today. There are less Robin Yount RC AUTOS out there than unsigned so IMO it is more valuable and it definitely means more to me.

Are you talking about purpose to sell or keep for your personal collection?

I look at it this way, a Jordan RC is worth what, like 100s of dollars. A Jordan base card is worth what, 25 cents?

A signed Jordan RC isn't worth that much more signed because of the value issues above. Conversely, get a Jordan base signed and it adds hundreds to the value. It's simple math.

Signed Base + Unsigned RC is worth more than Unsigned Base + Signed RC
