what are some good brands to buy, and since im just starting off should i just start buyin a couple packs at a time or should i go out and get sets

also whats the best way to store your cards...like to keep them in a book or in hard plastic?

I'm not big on the books, after a while the weight takes a toll on the corners i think,I use the card shoe boxes and top loaders/screwdowns.I don't buy but 3-4 boxes a year,I stick to buying singles, seems I get more of the people I want that way,or get better stuff buying singles than pulling them from packs/boxes.

Forgive the ignorance....what are these redemption cards? According to a couple of post that I read, I think that they are free-bees that have a clock on them. If the time expires, you miss out. Am I correct in my assumption?

Redemptions are cards companies put into packs when a certain card isn't ready to be manufactured. You then fill out the card, send it in and the company will send you the card when it is ready.

Alot of times it's due to players not signing or taking a long time to return the signed pieces. Companies sometimes send cards or stickers to the player to have them autographed but the player doesn't want to for some reason and thats when redemptions come in.

Ah...ok thanks. Is there something that I should do as I start off? Some cards that I should look for? That is pretty wide open, let me say this: I have been collecting Topps so far. Is there something that makes one card or set under a name brand more valuable than others?
Here is a question that may sound silly to some, but I collected comics as a kid and premieres were huge: Detective comics introduces Batman, that sorta thing. Is it possible that a card other than say a rookie card would be more valuable than the rookie card? Since I'm watching the game, I will use that as an example: Dunn's rookie vs Dunn's Atlanta cards.
    Thanks for the info.
