    Do RCs mean anything anymore???

Does a player's rookie card mean anything anymore? With so many versions of autographed cards, game used cards and #ed parallels, it doesn't seem like the plain, old-school "rookie card" of a player garners that much interest anymore (unless, of course, it's high-end autographed and gu).

I just remember when having a player's RC meant something, and was wondering if still did. Just curious about others' thoughts on this...

I'm an old fashion collector and still do collect just the base rookie card of a player. Some times the parallel is just plain ugly. If I happen to come across the "rare..ultra rare" version of it then I might pick it up if its at a decent/non-over-rated price ..if its eye appealling.
Right now I'm collecting the A's Landon Powell RC's. And for example the 05' Bowman Chrome X-fractor of his card is just plain ugly in my eyes, so I'll never get it.

Some plain RC's are still worth money. Like the higher end products like SP Authentic and SPx. I have always enjoyed collecting the lower end RC's like Topps. So plain old RC's aren't worth as much as they used to be , but there still fun to collect. Alsoone of the most amazing RC's ever is a 2000 SP Authentic Tom Brady. It books for $800. Hope this helps.

Now days everyone wants the biggest and best... a Topps RC is nothing near big nor the best. It's all about the Auto'd/5 Game-Used/1/1 cards.

I still like RCs. Give me a Barry Bonds or Michael Jordan RC any day over GU/serial#/etc. (Ok, maybe not AUTO.)
For current rookies, I don't mind the lower end RCs either. You could shell out a lot on a high end RC (GU + serial# + AUTO), and he could turn out to be a bench warmer. And you pick up the same card for chump change later. With the lower end RCs, there is not as much of a 'gamble'.

I feel like my collection is based off off rookie cards.....I have tons of G/U and serialed, but nothing makes me feel better than obtaining a rookie of an all-time great or favorite player. I think as time moves on RC will be less valued, but that is the way the hobby is moving. Can we do anything about it? who knows? I say their is too much of a market right now for the non-base cards

Thanks for the thoughts. I might be a little old fashion myself because I like getting players RCs, and was just wondering if anyone else did also.

I'm still trying to get Dan Marino's RC lol, And when i was a kid in Chicago i use to buy those basketball cards all the time and still don't know what i did with them, to think i could of had a couple Jordan rookies in my collection right now. I say if the price is right then i'll get RC cards of players i like.
