when mailing somebody beforehand to see if they sign...

How do you suggest they answer you? Give them your email? I'm talking about when if you want to make sure that a person will willingly autograph your item, you mail them a letter beforehand asking them if they do.

I include a SASE, ask for their permission to send something to sign for me, state that I would include any fee they may require, and say I look forward to their response. I send alot of multi signed photos out, and have probably sent about 200 letters like this. I would say all but about ten people have responded, and 90 percent of them say to send the item and not to worry about a fee.

What I have started doing is to make my own postcards and send them along with the request. On the postcard I will put their name and something simple for them to check like a Yes,No box for permission to sign and a blank for their fee amount. The good thing about that is the postage on postcards is only $0.29 so you save a little money if you plan on sending out a lot. You have to make the postcards slightly less than 4x6 to get them in a business envelope. Just go to Wal-mart and get some cardstock and download a template online and go from there.

Would my email idea work? I know I'm being cheap, but it seems easier.

You are making it more difficult on the person, in my opinion. I know that if I got a letter from someone asking for me to email them back, I'm most likely going to forget as soon as I put the letter down.

Seriously should you send the request letter first remember to send a copy of that poscard or letter back with your request. Your politeness in asking first may actually net you a requested inscription.

I say just send if they sign they sign if they do not they do not. Alot of times if they charge a fee they will send your stuff back with a note saying that they charge a fee.

The idea is before you send an item that has other signatures and you would have a real issue trying to replace, you pave the ground before mailing. I give props to those who are willig to do it at all. I have a card signed by Joe Morgan and Tony Perez. The other person on the card is Pete Rose and we had a window a few years ago where he signed TTM. I never did take the risk as Morgan does not sign cards. Here it is on the top row and YES I know Phillies fans my Big Red Machine in your uniform!
