Wanna take the time...
To thank all the traders who play fair and don't try to squeeze every penny out of a trade they can get. I'm an old school trader back to the days when putting cards in the bicycle
spokes was the thing to do. My collection is much more meaningful because of the traders who colllect for personal reasons that has nothing to do with Beckett or eBay or $$$. Because of you this is a place that has brought out the good in me.

We can be tempted to limit deals by allowing these resources to control our thinking and actions.
We must get past it and realize that it's best not to be stuck on this or that as it only effects each person challenged.

So really... do you go buy SV or BV or TV??? I laugh when I hear that.
I would say the hobby has changed in the last 15-20 years and the majority are in it for the $$$.

I am in it for both. I collect the stuff I want to collect but am usually not able to afford that stuff unless I flip a lot of cards to make profit. I work for darn near minimum wage and could not afford half the stuff in my collection unless I do a lot of buying and selling.
However, it is nice to see the old ways still strong with some people.

My collection is my collection, some cards I like better then others. If I can get a card for my collection that i like better then the one im willing to trade then I'll do it. Trading should be fun not work. I open boxes in hope of getting some nice fits for my collection. I don't open boxes to get excited over a card that is in high dollar and high demand and try to sell ASAP. That makes no sense whatsoever. I appreciate all sports the good and the bad. If you no nothing about a sport dont touch the boxes. It's horrible when theses dealers ect... open cases, pull these cards most collectors can only dream of pulling but will never because now ther on ebay with a RIDICULOUS bin for the next 5- 10 years...LOL Or the cards sit in a dark hole where other collectors wait untill the $$$ rises so they can try to get the most out of these cards by whatever means nescessary.
Collecting has its ups and downs. I wonder what it would be like if we could all gather in the center of holiday inn for a weekend of trading only. Wonder how all the $$$ hungry so and so's would do then...hahahah

I would say I am in both but rarely. I mostly buy boxes and keep 95% of the cards I keep for my collection. I only sell if I would like to get a PC item or more boxes of a product or I need money to pay a bill.

Great idea, but this would only be a success for everyone if trading went back to the way it was before the era of the price guide!

I'm in the hobby for the love of it, have been for 20 years. But when someone asks to buy some cards I have, and wont pay more than $4.00 for a hard signed cert auto just because they are set building....get real. The player on the card still holds some value, and the fact that they SIGNED it should be worth more than your daughters weekly allowance...rant....
What would YOU pay for a Guy Carbonneau hard signed auto? Assuming you were a Habs fan that is.

There are almost as many way off collecting as there are cards and no one can say that the way they collect is the right way or the way it should be done. It can be frustrating for those of us who collect one way to see the way others do it but that's just the way it has become and most likely always will be. There is no harm in wishing it could go back to the old days when a straight up trade of a Bob Griese for a Larry Little could still go down but don't lose too much sleep over it because for the most part those days are gone. Sure, there are still guys who don't get hung up with the $$$ but I can pretty much guarantee you that even those pinning for the old days wouldn't trade a 1/1 Cam Newton Auto for a plain old Topps Cam Newton.
If you have a PC and you are actively striving to obtain cards for it then I think you are a collector. It doesn't matter to me what legal means you use to obtain those cards. If you strictly trade then great. If you bust wax to sell to get money to buy PC, or trade for it, fine. If you buy cheap singles to turn around and sell to raise money to obtain PC again, no problems.
If you don't have any cards and you just buy and sell to make money that's OK too but you are not a card collector, you are a business person. It's still a legitimate way to participate in the hobby but don't feel bad if others don't consider you a true hobbiest.
I think the vast majority of people fall somewhere in between and there is an obvious gradient. Is there anyone reading this who can honestly say they have never sold a card for money. It's easy for us old timers to chastise the youngsters for their money first attitude but much of it has to do with the age in which they grew up. When we were young if there was a Parallel set it was a Topps Gold there was usually one per pack. Now a 1 per pack parallel barely merits a second glance and everyone wants the 1 per box or 1 per case or 1 of 1 platinum or uranium or adamantium or whatever. When we were young there no Jersey cards and all jerseys were throwbacks. The Redskins still had an arrow on their helmets and the New York Jets still had a jet (that 1963 helmet was so cool) My point is that today's hobby is nearly impossible to participate in without some degree of buying and selling. No, it doesn't have to be the cut throat, get the most I can for every card type of buying and selling but that's the way life is. My advice is to ignore the parts that bother you the most and embrace the parts that truly give you pleasure. Life is too short to get worked up over a cardboard deal gone wrong.
Still, I hear you vanilla. I would love to see a revival of the "lets just trade to trade" days. Here's my Larry Little, thanks for the Bob Griese. I don't have a problem with buyers and sellers and flippers and busters (or would they be breakers) and the like as they are simply doing what they enjoy. At least I hope they are enjoying it because it would be a shame if they were ruining the hobby for the rest of us and they were getting nothing but lots of money out of it.Last edited by sschind; 12-06-2011 at 10:52 AM.
