Gilbert Brule Cup RC - How much do you think it would sell for?
I think this is the first time I've ever started a thread like this. For the most part, my belief is that if you own a card, sell it for whatever price you want...... or don't sell it, unless someone is willing to pay a price you're comfortable with.
This is not me complaining about the price of card, this is just me expressing my surprise in what the card actually sells for!
The card in question is a Gilbert Brule Cup RC from 05-06. For myself.... I collect a RC / Auto / GU / Pictured as an Oilers, for everyone whom has ever played a game with the Oilers. I do make an attempt to get the 'best' RC of each player, and specifically a RC / GU / Auto when available. This has meant that Sam Gagner has stayed out of my price range.... though I think the single colour white swatches are getting close :) Last year's big three RCs for the Oilers also sell for FAR more than I'm willing to pay (though some of the nicer MPSs are coming down in value too).
Brule is one guy though, that I figured I should be able to pick up for a reasonably good price. I paid about $40 for Cam Barker in the summer.... $25 for Ben Eager...... guys like Tom Gilbert, Andrew Cogliano, Jeff Deslauries (basically scrubs, as far as the hobby is concered) have usually cost between $20 and $40.
Brule, for some reason, consistantly sells for much higher than that. My latest loss on eBay went for $60 (about $20 more than I'm willing to pay). It did have a very nice swatch (you can see the link here: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/270867063667?...=STRK:MEDWX:IT) but this isn't really any higher than the last couple I've missed out on... I've seen ones with better swatches sell for $80ish, ones with lesser swatches sell in the $60-$70 range.
What am I missing here?? The guy was a #6 overall pick, but is considered a HUGE first round bust. He's playing in the AHL this year, not being good enough to crack the Oilers roster, and not even being good enough to be claimed off wiavers when they sent him down at the start of the season.
Obviously my problem is that I don't want the card as badley as others, and I can accept that (I'd pay $40, max, regardless of the swatch). If the prices don't come down, it's simply a card I'd like to own, but probably won't.
My question - Does this sale price surprise the rest of you as much as it does me?

I think it has to do with it being The Cups inaugural year. The lower end stuff from 05/06 seems to sell better than the lower end stuff from any other year ... especially the rookies with decent swatches.
IMO, 05/06 Cup RCs look the best. I havent really liked any other rookie design except for 05/06 and 09/10

I'm in the same boat as you on the Brule. I'd like to have one but like you said it always seems to go higher than comparable RCs from the Cup. I think canucksfan007 is partially right but it seems like the Brule price is still out of whack in comparison to other RCs in the 05-06 set.

I appriciate the comments guys.
I suspect you're probably right.... it's an 05-06 thing. Never really gave that angle much though (it was the first year, and the set is still more desirable to collect than other years??).
I can understand BINs being high..... people may have paid big bucks for Brule back in the day, and won't liquidate them for more than 20-30% less than they paid. The auction prices just continue to amaze me.

Strange really. 16 months ago every Brule card was less than $5.00 no matter what it was. His 1/1 Plates were selling for between $5-$9.00.
I didn't pay any attention to "The Cup" as I don't bother with cards of that nature. But his Young Gun cards were NOT selling at 50 cents or less.

You're absolutly right!
I can pick up virtually any other RC, auto, or GU card of this guy I might want..... and for $1, or less. That's what has me so confused on this one..... there should be ZERO market for the guy.
Guess being part of a popular set keeps the SV higher than I would think.

Does Beckett still list it a relatively high price? There's still those out there that will adhere to those values and see "Wow it still books for $250? In that case anything less than $100 is a steal, right?" So they bid it on up a little higher than you'd expect.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I agree with centerhice on this one, the 05-06 Cup set were the best design by far and still a big favorite for all so that set tends to get the premium over the others. However, it is Gilbert Brule and shouldnt be that high in my opinion comapred to others. I got a sweet Sigalet 3clr gold /57 for only 11.71$
Sean im sorry, I cannot explain though prices lol, it does seem very high for Brule, you would think by now he would have been in the 20$ max area
Just as a comparison though, im pretty sure Jimmy Howard has a tad more hobby love than Brule, 1clr or not, you would think this would sell much higher than Brule:

or even a sick 3clr 4brk of Stempniak
