Fleer redemption cards to be honored next month
By Mike Scott
Despite the continued financial struggles of Fleer/Skybox International LP and Fleer Collectibles, LLC, tens of thousands of redemption card holders of Fleer products are likely to get cards that are due to them.
Bankruptcy lawyer Warren Martin of Morristown, N.J. firm Porzio, Bromberg and Newman is expected to file a motion to a New Jersey circuit court some time in October that will allow all holders of unredeemed Fleer redemption cards to get something in return.
Martin's paralegal, Matt Laskowski, said there is no specific timetable set as to when the motion will be filed. The hope is that one signature of game-used card will be sent to every Fleer redemption card owner who sends that card into Fleer that is postmarked by October 15, 2005.
"There is no guarantee as to what the courts will allow, but it is our hope to get every holder of a redemption card the closest match possible."
Laskowski said it will be impossible for some redemption card holders to get the exact card their redemption promises, because some game-used or autographed cards were never made.
By May 31, 2005, both Fleer/Skybox International, LP and Fleer Collectibles, LLC had ceased all operations and commenced a state court proceeding called an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC), filed in the Probate Part, Chancery Division of the Burlington County, New Jersey, Superior Court. The assets of both companies have been assigned to Martin.
Shortly thereafter, the law firm held an auction and sales of Fleer's estate assets for millions of Fleer trading cards, unopened boxes and packs of cards as part of the bankruptcy filing and found "several hundred thousand" game-used and autographed trading cards in the four major sports that had not be awarded.
Laskowski said his firm estimated that 45,000 redemption card holders never received cards they were entitled – a number derived from Fleer corporate records. Other worldwide collectors holding Fleer redemption cards are encouraged to turn them in to the Fleer corporate mailing address, so Laskowski expects that number to rise significantly.
Multiple redemption cards can be sent in one envelope. Senders are encouraged to retain copies of their cards and related information for their records.
Again, the redemption cards must be postmarked by October 15, 2005.

Porzio, Bromberg and Newman is managing the flow of all incoming Fleer/Skybox mail until further notice.
