Hockey is cleaner when gloves come off
As a 5-foot-9, 185-pound producer of 264 goals and just two fights in 14 seasons, Danny Briere might be expected to be the prototype of a player who wants the ice free of goons. Instead, he believes he is typical of skilled players who have a greater fear of an NHL without fighting.
"For people who haven't played, sometimes it's tough to understand," said the Philadelphia center. "But most players feel fighting leaves the game cleaner.

i watched the Canucks/Kings tonight with a friend of mine from South Africa who is not used to all of the nuences of the game. there was a minor scrap in the third period at which point he looked at me and said 'no other organized sport would allow this' and my responce was yes i know but when Brown wants to take run at one of the Sedins in the future he'll think twice. he thought about it for a minute and said 'way to protect your stars'. he was right intimidation keeps the goons in line and keeps the stars playing hockey. do you think Gretzky would have had such an awesome career without Semenko and Mcsoreley looking over his shoulder. and for all of you doubters out there look at the greatest player in the NHL right now whose career might be over at 24. thats my 2 cents worth.
happy new years

I think it was said best when a player said:
"Let the players police their own game"------

Hockey has always taken care of it's own business. The bleeding hearts that don't watch the game, or understand it, are always the first to try and Police it.
Bullies in any Sport always get their comeuppance.

A lot of non-true fans of hockey seem to say to get fighting out of the game since they do not understand the bigger picture of self-policing.
In European hockey, fighting is prohibitive and has lead to stickwork incidents.
