Are people only wanting to trade junk really collectors?

Why do so many people build pages for cards they "want" then will not pay cash for them? Then all they have for trade is a pile of junk no one wants from when they bought packs 10-15 years ago.

I tried to make a trade with a guy the other day who wanted to trade base 11/12 Black Diamond for GU cards BUT he only wants his wants. I explained that no one is going to trade nice GU cards for base cards and he then insisted to tell me that only single diamond cards are base cards an that double, triple, and quad diamonds are actually parallels and not base, so I know what your saying. Guy wants to trade me $2 - $3 base cards for the GU that he wants. I told him I'll hit him back in a few months cause he'll still have them all then so we can try again then :)

I hear you out. Things can get hectic.

That's why it pays to be flexible as every person and case is different and at least start down the road of learning how to get along better in an environment where most of us are simply trying to get it right.

A couple of things not aimed at anyone in particular.

1) IMO no card is worth more than a 2 or 3 bucks. I will never spend more than that and it would have to be a pretty nice one to make me cough up the 3 bucks. I only say that to preface a few of the other things I am going to say.

2) I would gladly trade GU for base cards that I need for my collection. I don't have any GU to trade because I don't rip packs and I don't buy tradebait but if I did I would have no problem trading GU or even Autos for base I need. I may not do a 1 for 1 trade but if you had several base I needed for my 1 tom Brady GU whatever I would do the trade in a heartbeat.

3) The vast majority of you will never have to worry bout a trad with me because I would never suggest trading my base for your precious little GU (or auto or numbered etc.) cards because I know how valuable they are to you and how easily you are offended by people only offering "junk"

4) I would rather have 10,000 cards worth $1.00 each in my collection than 100 cards worth $100.00 each.

5) I don't do many trades because all I have is "junk" and no one wants it. The one trade I had on here I was happy to get because the other guy wanted the same stuff I had and he had the kind of stuff I wanted. It was one of the best trades I ever made I think.

6) it's not all about the money to everyone. Some people are still in the hobby for the cards and the players and the camaraderie.

7) I know that many many cards sell for far more than my $3.00 limit. I don't have any of those cards (unless I traded junk for them) and I won't have any of those cards (again, unless someone wants junk in return) I also know that it would be insulting for me to offer $3.00 for a autographed Aaron Rodgers card so you don't have to worry about that happening.

8) This is my main point, I don't care if someone only collects base they are every bit the collector as someone who only wants the high end stuff. Maybe even a bit more in my book because they are collecting for the love of the hobby and the cards and the players and not for the "value." In fact, I sometimes wonder if those people who only collect Autos or numbered or GU or what have you are as worthy of the title collector but I realize everyone collects in his or her own way and whatever way that is it is just as legitimate as any other way.

Sorry about the rant but you touched a nerve. You may have a legitimate question regarding a particular deal but to suggest that people who only have "junk" are somehow less of a collector than someone who has stuff that is "worth" more is just plain ... well, its a family site so I will just let you fill in the blank.

I find this amusing as so much GU stuff out there is every bit as worthy of the label "junk" as any 1990 Donruss card. There's nothing special about GU cards. There is no shortage of them, not really even a really big demand for them and the authenticity of the scraps of fabric and wood have been suspect since day 1. They are just a way to prop up the retail prices of packs and boxes, mostly in sets that don't come close to holding their value.

I agree completely. I wouldn't give you a dime for GU items. But 95% of the people on this site only want GU and Auto's...i get a good laugh out of all the people acting like their GU is worth more than a "lowly" base card...you also have to take into consideration that their is no age restriction on this site and if a trade falls through that they can only email or pm the trader and tell you that they can show you the paperwork needed to file a internet/mail fraud claim, etc. There needs to be a tad bit more security than that...not too mention what would happen to a person under 18?

If everyone had the "Good Cards" for trade then it wouldn't such a great hobby. I'll say some peoples junk is others people treasure. The reason anyone collects is because your want list are hard to get and the person you least expect has it. Just my two cents...

Here's my spin on it. Due to cost constraints I don't have much of the so called high end stuff such as certified autos, GU, patches, etc. I don't even collect GU and patches unless they are autographed. I mainly stick to low end and do a lot of trading up. Whenever I do run across a GU or patch I offer it for trade for other cards that I can use. Yes it may take a while but it is enjoyable for me not to mention more cost efficient. Bottom line is find a collecting strategy that works for you but keep an open mind. Last but not least this is still a hobby so no matter what you collect or your reasons for collecting have fun with it.

That's not true.

Though I'd wonder how you would even impose an age limit where you didn't have people say under the age of 18 because on eBay I ran into quite a bit of people who weren't 18 yet they had credit cards, Paypal, and were buying and selling like crazy.

re read his post if you care to. he didnt even a little bit refer to people who trade "junk" as less of collectors. hes saying and hes 100 percent right thats its annoying when people want more expensive cards but only want to trade low end base or low end stuff for them. relax a little
